Anyone still playing Battlezone?

Hey guys,
a few days ago I was flipping through my collection of PC games and came across a long-time favorite of mine which I haven't played for ages: Activision's Battlezone (yup, the very first one). And here comes the good news: With OpenGlide and the 1.4 patch, it still works under Windows XP! I don't know how often I played through the campaign, which is, unfortunately, pretty short.
I have also played Battlezone II every once in a while, but IMO, it is waaay inferior to the first instalment. The scenario is yet another "fight the evil aliens" washed-up sort of thing - I liked fighting out the Cold War in deep space much better. Also, controls were more intuitive. In the first part, I spent most of my time battling the enemy - in the second part I battle the interface.
AFAIK there is currently a modding project underway which seeks to recreate the first BZ with the engine of the second - really something to look out for.
And for all those of you who are interested: There are still some servers up for BZ to play online. Just wanted to let you know :)

I have it in MS Arcade fashion but don't really play it. I think that works with Xp, but I see I don't have it installed now. Only on the old game rig I've kept.

Sry, I didn't think of the very first arcade version (forgot about that), but actually it's 1998 namesake :) I have never played that one - maybe should give it a try ;)

Actually i was just thinking what can i install on this piece of sh*t pc while the other half is using our main pc. Have installed some old games 'Dark Colony' 'Dark Rein' Quake, SH2 & Uplink. Now that you mention Battlezone im going to install that - BZ 2 dont have the first.

Found a mod site as well

And the community is still alive and buzzing

I only have Battle Zone 2 (somewhere...). I loved it and played it countless times. then finally I upgraded my PC and it didn't work anymore properly. The controls didn't respond in the way the should and sometimes even got stuck for a second or so (IIRC that is...).
I bet it's more than 6 years I haven't played it. Maybe I should try it with my current rig.:hmmm:

Game runs fine im using the BZ2_v13TechAlpha5_english patch found here: http://www.filefront.com//bz2+v13tec.../fileinfo.html

This pc is only for internet browsing and playing older games - BZ 2 is running in 1280x1024 res with everything on high running winxp sp2, 256ram, 32mb onboard video card :DL oh and onboard sound ftw!. Game looks very good for its age. Went online just to try it out found a host with 6 players running with the same patch, ping was 350 though lol yet still playable. I notice other hosts are using the developers patch 1.2 with lower ping so up to you what patch you want to use. Read that this alpha5 patch works better with the mods available and it seem to fix some graphic bugs in the menu when i first loaded BZ2 up.

Anyways im going to play through the single player first to get the hang of it again. my online name is 'dood' I'll most likely be the one running around with no ship :haha:
