Operating system change

if i change to windows vista, what should i go for, home basic, home premium, business or ultimate? i only game on the rig so i don't need anything fancy.
and what about windows7, it seems that most people testing it prefer it to vista?

i read, that in order to use the full 4GB ram i have to have a 64 bit operating system, is that true and are all versions of vista available in the 64 bit option?

thanks for any help!

I'm running the windows 7 64 bit OS and I can say it is very smooth with all the games I have on, these include SH3 and SH4 with loading speed improvments and frame rates on both. With rumors that Windows 7 could be released as early as October I think you would be better waiting and just move straight to Win7 if thats the way your inclined to go.

my 2 cents

Long time Vista user myself, but if windows 7 is that close I would say wait. And yes you want 64 bit OS to take advantage of memory over 3.5GB

I agree with those above. WAIT for Windows 7. The RC is a better OS than Vista.

Back to your question....

In Vista, you can get 32 bit or 64 bit version of all of them EXECPT Vista Starter.

One reason to wait for 7 is the change in the way the versions are sold.

In Vista, Home has some options, Business has others. However, they do NOT overlap many of the features. Only Ultimate has them all.

In Windows 7, Home has features, Business will have all the features of Home PLUS some directed at the business end of things (IT networking and such really). Ulitmate has everything that Home & Business has, but one or two goodies meant for large networks.

@ subdude If you have a complete XP sp2 Wait for Win7 and do a partition and, dual boot and install both.

Download the RC of 7 - run it for a while, and then you have enough info as to whether you want to buy it when released, or stick with your currently licensed XP.

Vista is solid - its true. But I still wouldn't recommend it simply due to bloat if you don't already have a licensed version. Why spend money on something that you really don't need?
