They hatched

I linked it some weeks ago, and do it again today, since the past hours, the chickens have hatched. Take into account German time, GMT+1

Chicken?;)

Skybird 05-14-09 09:57 AM

Did not know any better word, the dictionary failed me over a better alternative.

chick [] n
a) (of chicken) Küken nt; (= young bird) Junge(s) nt
b) (inf: = child) Kleine(s) nt
c) (inf: = girl) Mieze f (inf); shes some chick sie ist nicht ohne (inf)

Hmm? Is this some sort of secret message designed to fool the people watching you and yet deliver important information to your contact?

...or maybe I just don't speak German...

Skybird 05-14-09 10:05 AM

A lifecam from a kestrel's clutch hardly can be a secret message. The baby-falcons are covered by the mother, but she moves around at times, then you see them.

Also watch the pics here:

From the poor translations I got from babel fish, I'm assuming they're breeding and watching a rare falcon?

Skybird 05-14-09 11:02 AM

Kestrels are not considered rare. The population is almost global, and healthy (it hasn't always been like that, though). I often see them here in Münster, too. sometimes they sit on a stake while I pass them just 2-3 meters away.

I like them, they look both cute and like a predator. They can get very used to humans, living in relatively close proximity to them. Some of them even seem to have learned to favour cities.

the text is not so important, it's about the livecam, and the photos.

Try this www.leo.org:
Very good website for looking up words.:yeah:

The translation of Küken can be:
-biddy (AE)
-chick (o.k. maybe you were not wrong after all)
-fledgeling
and
-poult

I just have seen the whole family, mummy was feeding the kids, when daddy came along and had a look, too. I'm just concerned, I saw three little heads yelling for food, but the fourth one never rose, and the body laid still in the middle. I hope it just was tired or already fed up.

Does anyone know how many little birds usually survive from one falcon family?

Oberon 05-14-09 03:37 PM

I think it's anywhere between one and three, four is a good rate, but regrettably, it would not surprise me to go down to three.

Nice cam, thanks for the link Sky :yeah:

Raptor1 05-14-09 03:46 PM

Oh, now it makes more sense

Always liked birds, probably more than any other type of animal

What a nice link Skybird, though I can't seem to stream any video, only single shots...

I'll leave some links on the same matter:

Since your from Germany maybe you can answer me this, are the spotting scopes from Lidl and Alsi any good? I'm tinking of getting the Bresser/Meade 90mm scopes, since the Bins are very good and quite the bargain...
Has anybody ever used any of these? I'm aiming to use them to Digiscope a small island about a mile from my house' veranda, thanks in advance!
