Please Help Me out

Ok so I Just bought this game and being a complete Rookie at Sub sims I am Really Confused. I have my tracking set to What I think is aouto tracking. My Sonar man call out the Target. So I go to thell him Follow that target and I get this " No target selected" or the ship stays on plotted Course. I am really lost as to how Auto tracking works I spent about 4 hours today chaseing Blips on the map to never get in a fight. I tryind the manuel tracking but it was only worse.

What are some ways to quickily hit a target that say pops up 2 squars away. if the auto tracking is not working or so it seems anything I have tryed just leads to sailing in circles not finding a fight?

Thanks everyone

Sounds like you need to learn the basics of the game. Here is a link with some basics. Make sure you read the SHIV Guide, speed, ect.

Also read the stickys at the top that are related to tactics and tips.

Welcome Groove74! Armistead is absolutely correct... there is a ton of great info in the threads of this forum. It may take you a while to get the hang of it... but this game is a blast to play... and on the right machine its beautiful too! Keep working with it... you'll get the hang of it.

You're not missing anything. As you will soon see pointed out many times around here, the manual is too small to even make a decent doorstop. Subsim.com is your manual, and a great one it is.

Yes indeed you are correct there I have spend alot of time looking over the info very good stuff. I have found that no matter how much I study the vids I still suck at tracking and finding targets. I am not very good at math and this game show me that lol. in most cases I see the red blip on the map and by the time I get there even at full speed the blip is gone. the game all be it fun it is turning into a dot chaseing game. I now realize how smat those sailors must have been and are. lol I am sure with some more tial and error I will get it and the tools here are a big help.
thanks everyone

Welcome!!! Sub sims take some time to get the hang of but the pay-off is fantastic! Have fun learning! Don't get frustrated about getting frustrated :haha:! It's a normal part of the learning curve!

;)

The game is alot of fun indeed. I do like a challenge for sure. I am not frustrated yet. really the hardest part for me is traking the targets on the nav map. I will say I am wearing out the training Video. Anyone know of a Mod or Option in the game that will make it easer for me like for example a mod or something that will help me compute the navigation and stuff. I am getting the hang of in battle commands it just the open map tracking that is getting me?

Well I can help you with a couple of things. First of all you can download my Dick O'Kane Technique practice mission. No, you're not leaning the Dick O'Kane technique, that's for later, but this puts you in the warm, safe waters around Catalina island off the peaceful coast of California with just one target, no bad DDs anywhere to be found. You can practice stalking him to your heart's content!

Now you need to look at my Auto Targeting Training Video, the first of its kind, since nobody thought it was necessary. You and a dozen other guys say this video is necessary and it shows you all you have to do to put a torpedo in the side of your target.

Once you get feeling comfortable with driving the boat into position and letting loose automatically targeted torpedoes on your hapless foe, you can visit the Sub Skippers' Bag of Tricks thread, where there are all kinds of begginers' and not so beginners' manual targeting techniques you can learn. Have fun!

Forget chasing the dots, you are right, by the time you get there, they are gone. Usually they are a lot farther away than you think. They might look close but could be 500 miles away and they are moving too. Sometimes it takes almost the whole day to get to a "red blip" that looks like it's right next to you.
Usually you can find targets where they send you on missions (that's why they send you there. :03:) Everyone has their favorite "search" pattern. But just zip zag around the area you were sent to patrol and you will start to see where the ship tend to travel. If you are running without any mods you will very quickly start finding ships and convoys.

Welcome aboard.

Thanks guys for the tips.

@ Rockin Robbins: I have been studying your Videos mainly the one called Nav map charting tools. great Vids and very help full thanks for the work you have done for us noobs. this is my First Sub sim I have played. I generally do Flight sims like IL2 or MS Flight Sim. I tried Silent Hunter 3 but never really put the time into it. But I find myself really wanting to learn SH4.

I am glad to have found this Site as it is been really helping me learn how to pilot a sub.

Rockin Robbins 05-09-09 09:52 AM

Once you get your feet on the ground with SH4 it will be much easier to go back to SH3 and have fun. Just don't make the U-Boat guys' mistake of expecting a U-Boat to behave exactly like a fleet boat. It doesn't. There is a lot of skills transfer, but some aspects must be learned and appreciated on their own merit.

Being a great submarine skipper will make you a better U-Boat skipper. It works the other way around, too, but let each boat have its own personality, quirks and advantages.

And remember, for each complaint or gripe you have about the way things work, the real submariners had 10 or a hundred! Modeling frustration is a valid part of simulation.
