Sometimes everything just...
Sometimes everything just falls into place. I started a new career in January 1941. BF18. After dealing with an unarmed medium cargo vessel earlier in the day we came across a C&D class destroyer steaming along at 12kts. It was clear and dark with 4m waves. She seemed to be completely unaware of us so I decided to risk a surface attack on her. She was 20 degrees off our port so I ordered "decks awash" & reduced speed to 1/3 until she was within 3000m. I lowered our speed to slow and let her come to us. At 2200m I launched a T1 set to 5m (magnetic fuse). The torpedo detonated right underneath her stern and broke her in two. It was at that moment that the IWO spotted another C&D approaching. I didn't want to push our luck so I ordered flank speed & turned us away from the second C&D. We left her popping off star shells & looking around for us in vain.
It was only a C&D class but I have to say that was the best ambush that I've ever pulled off.:D U-207 VIIC |

I only wish that I could pull this off with bigger warships. I had a recent career in the Med where I ran into a task force containing King George V (I think). Anyway, the weather wasn't on my side; clear but with 15m waves. From my position I could see that I wasn't going to catch them so I had to let the task force go.:wah::wah:
Made up for it on my next outing by sinking HMNZS Gambia.:D |
