Can someone explain the "End Patrol" function?
When I finish a patrol, I hit escape and click "End patrol," or whatever the button is called, while still out at sea. Is this the "proper" way to end a patrol, or should I take my U-boat right back to the dock? The reason I ask is because it allows me to use almost all of my fuel without worrying about saving enough to get back to base.

Yes....the end patrol button does allow you to teleport home, not only saving fuel but avoiding enemy aircraft and other obstacles along the way. I think most players institute a self-imposed house rule where they sail all the way back to their home port to get a fuller game experience.

also if you play at 100% realism... the end patrol function will only offer you the "abandon career" option unless you are within 20km of a friendly port... this forces you to conserve fuel and sail all the way home.
any realism setting less than 100% will offer you the option to "return to port" thus allowing you to safely end the mission anywhere on earth. "teleporting" you back to base |
Sail back to base. Lots of times I see more ships on the way back then I did out.

When you are close to the starting port and hit escape it's an option to dock at "harbour".

I always sail all the way back to base. It just feels right.
Of course the teleport home function is awfully handy when your rudder is destroyed and the game won't let you turn around with just the engines. I wish SH4 had that function. |
Not using GWX will offer you renown getting back to port

100% = No tele-portation. Works for me.

I always sail back and dock at port. I am just one of those goofy types.:88)

I too sail back to port and back her into a pen - the yard tugs are never around when we need them! We use spring lines!

I have exerienced multiple patrols where I got 100 more renown points than I was expecting. Since 100 is what the config file says is the return to port bonus, I figured that sometimes this was awarded. I have been unable to detect any pattern to the times I got the points and the times I didn't. I always sail back to port, and almost always dock at the pier where the band is playing (N/A in La Spezia) by reversing into the berth, cutting the engines early to avoid hitting the wall. |
I'm afraid I never sail back to port:oops: Running the game never past 128T/C makes a patrol very long but much more enjoyable, problem is cause it takes so long there isn't enough time to sail back as well!:wah: Oh well, each to there own:yeah:
