SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea defiantly carried out a provocative rocket launch Sunday that the U.S., Japan and other nations suspect was a cover for a test of its long-range missile technology.
Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230GMT) Sunday from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean government said. In Washington, the State Department also confirmed the launch.
The rocket flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, the Japanese broadcaster NHK said, citing its government.

Geez I bet the Japanese must be royally pissed about that one. Imagine if the missile malfunctioned and crashed on Japanese soil.

Torplexed 04-05-09 01:16 AM

Oh goody. The world's foremost extortion state deploying their newest shakedown weapon. :nope: Pay us off or we'll play with fire some more.

FIREWALL 04-05-09 02:03 AM

It will be a shame if the N. Korean people have to pay for that idiots stupity if the next time something do's go wrong.

Unidentified South Korean official says it looks like it was carrying a satellite.

Wonder if the NKs are thinking of a FOBs type sat. AFter all this will be a low earth orbit sat if they have launched one.

Jimbuna 04-05-09 05:28 AM

What I would have given to see somebody 'accidentally' shoot it down :DL

If China can't restrain them nobody can :hmmm:

stabiz 04-05-09 05:34 AM

I vote for putting a huge lid on North Korea. Kevlar, preferably.

Steel_Tomb 04-05-09 06:13 AM

I'm surprised someone hasn't giving Kim Jong Il a new hole to breath through yet, its nothing less than he deserves... so many people have died under his rule, yet the complete indoctrination of the populus means that he's seen as their "Dear Leader"... what a load of utter BS. Does anyone have a rifle for sale? I feel like hopping on a plane to Pyonyang! :/\\chop

I wonder what the international response would have been if the Japs had shot down the missile? China and Russia would probably start their pro north korean rhetoric condeming them..

North Korea is no where close to being able to have an FOB.

Don't understand what the big deal is with this. This was just another demonstration of what North Korea CAN'T do. :har:

Right now, North Korea has a nuclear device (not a weapon) that does not work and a long range rocket that does not work.

I don't think I will be ducking-and-covering for a long time.

Oberon 04-05-09 11:09 AM

Oh, they launched it alright...straight into the Pacific... :har:

Ocean: 2 Taepongdo: 0

NeonSamurai 04-05-09 11:14 AM

Japan would have been well in its rights to shoot it down. Heck what they did is practically an act of war. Can you imagine what would happen if they had lobed it over say US soil into the Atlantic.

Platapus 04-05-09 11:16 AM

It is difficult to launch a satellite without going over someone's country. As Canada and Mexico can attest. There are treaties and international agreements that allow this.

So, no, Japan would not be within its rights to shoot down a commercial satellite rocket.

Tchocky 04-05-09 11:51 AM

I wonder how this story is being told in North Korea itself.

They declared that the satellite launched successfully and it's up there now. That'll be the same that their state radio will be broadcasting inbetween messages of celebration to the Dear Leader.

Raptor1 04-05-09 11:56 AM

"Our glorious leader's missile has accomplished it's mission and outperformed any imperialist western missile in existence" with an added touch of "Capitalists incapable and too afraid of shooting the missile down", probably
