D.I.D U-46 lost with all hands
October 21, 1940. Following a confused convoy encounter in fog and 15ms winds in the Western Approaches, with one 8000 tonnes merchant going down after three torpedo hits, U-46 ran perpendicularly away at periscope depth and failed to notice a DD approaching in its baffles. With screws fast approaching the crew attempted a crash dive and hard starboard turn only to be blown out of the water by a concentrated depth charge salvo. The boat was on its 10th patrol with its original crew. There were no survivors.

Did you request a death card from BdU? See D.I.D. Thread.

Bad luck sir.
The Officers and Crew of U-99 will hold a moment of silence, and every torpedo launched on our next patrol in your honour will proudly bear "U-46" painted on its side. |
Sorry to see a comrade lost!

Not as much bad luck as overconfidence! The Kaleun apparently poo-pah'd the timidity of the escorts without realizing that the third one had gone off the scope... straight up his Schwabian arsch!
