Did I hit a mine?

April 3, 1940

I was assigned to patrol AN11 and did so. I bagged a tramp steamer and after 48 hours decided to make my way SE to patrol AN55, north of Hartlepool before heading home. I had been to sea for 16 days at this point.

I was ahead slow at 25 meters in 70 meters of water and picked up a merchant so steered west to intercept. Having some time to kill I speed up to 32x to kill off the hour or so needed to get within periscope range.

It was at this point in 32x that suddenly we sank to 70 meters with all kinds of reports coming in of damage and heavy flooding. I came out of TC as fast as I could and started assigning damage control. We couldn't control the flooding and perished.

Of course I never heard anything because of the TC.

Did I hit a mine? We were closer to shore than the last patrols in the area, but not close to shore, still at least 100km or so away. I was in the high traffic lane from Hartlepool going NW though.

Had I been in 1x would I have heard the impact of the mine?

Are mines visable in external views?

Thanks,

Ted

Mines east of England from '39 onwards. It's a bit sparser, but not by much, in the early years. You definitely hit one. Mines are somewhat 'quiet" and you don't really hear them, because they you usually only hit them when you're careless.

Thanks,

Hi Ted - yes, they are visible if you use external camera and pan around underwater. Try this next time you are close to a port.

:help:Eastcoast is bad, plus generally its smaller tonnage ships there, depends on mod though.

bad luck

i sail through minefields all the time:o

only ever hit 2 though

if absolutely must go into minefields try and stay on the surface as most are at periscope depth

Did you apply to BdU for a Death Card (D.I.D. thread)??

If your playnig with GWX installed, then yes you hit a mine, The team put the east coast mine barrier in the game. It has gaps in it at various points to allow ships friendly to Britian in and out of ports, unfortunantley the German high command didn't know where these gaps were.

Take a look in the GWX manual and you will see the diagram of the east coast barrier minefield. Hope this lifts any confusion.

I also had this happen to me when I got too close to the east side of Helgoland, too. Be warned.

Laufen zum Ziel has a thread where he issues the documents that were issued in real life upon the loss of a u-boat, its captain and crew. Its so we can remember those that have fallen and sing songs about you over a bottle of Ale at our local pub.:()1:
