The Old Sailor's New Patrol Logs

A few years ago I posted a series of Patrol Logs, making them as realistic as I could. Some people found them fascinating, others found them boring. In fact they were not great stories like Laughing Swordfish's ongoing tale, nor were they funny like Brag's Balz series. They were just patrol logs.

I just completed the first 'pre-war' patrol of a new career, and thought I'd try again. This time I typed everything into SH3 Commander's new 'Patrol Log Editor' function, so they appear in Commander and in SH3's own Patrol Log section.

This is the first patrol of Herbert Geue, commanding the Type IIB u-boat U-7.

And this is how it shows up in SH3:

Very cool old chap....a bit of a change from the norm.

A word of advice though, if I may.....BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!! :DL

Otto Heinzmeir 03-05-09 12:01 PM

I love it. Especially the conversation with the sailboater. Shake out missions are always enjoyable. Everythings so peaceful. Looking forward to the continuing career, May it last through 1945.

Sailor Steve 03-05-09 12:07 PM

Not a chance of that. I have Commander set to 'Realistic Career Length', so I'm only good for 6-8 patrols. There will be others though.

@ Jim: Yeah, I know...you'd only be happy if I sank the sailboats!

very cool. i enjoyed it.

Murr44 03-05-09 03:21 PM

Pretty cool. I'd like to put entries like that in my logs but I can never remember exactly when stuff like weather changes happen.

Sailor Steve 03-05-09 03:23 PM

I'm pedantic, crazy and stupid. I write down everything in a notebook while I'm playing.

bigboywooly 03-05-09 03:30 PM

I used to keep a notebook when in the wolfpack league
No chance of remembering bugger all a few hours later otherwise

Nice one Steve

A work good done. :salute:

The little comments are what make it. Especially the parts about practicing following sounds contacts and stuff. The sailboat part was great too.

Wow, thats brilliant. I had an image of a sea salty kaleun in a knitted blue jumper biting into an orange reading that :).

How did you get the log book up to make entries? I wouldn't mind doing so myself.

Sailor Steve 03-05-09 04:26 PM

SH3 Commander 3.2 (the latest one "Thallium Edition") http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147237 has the Patrol Log Editor built right in. This link http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133102 will show you how it works, but you no longer have to download it separately.

JScones's first post will show you exactly how to use it. If you have any problems just ask.

Captain Birdseye 03-05-09 05:08 PM

Thank you :) i'll try minimizing SH3 and writing things in. Although last time I tried the patrol log wasn't there.

Sailor Steve 03-05-09 05:17 PM

If you minimize you'll need to use Notepad and transfer it later. SH3 Commander doesn't generate a log until the patrol is finished. You can only edit it after the fact.

I do it longhand and then type it in when I'm done. Just like real life.:D
