Misspelling
Yeah,
There's a problem with Silent Hunter IV. The problem is that there is a misspelling on the map that needs to be corrected. Port Swettenham is misspelled as "Port Sweetenham" on the map. In real life, it was spelled Port Swettenham, which is present day Port Klang Malaysia. It was named after Sir Frank Swettenham, a British explorer in 1901. Has anyone overlooked this? Does anyone know about this? How come Bounganville is spelled "Bourganville on the map, also? |
Wow that is a good catch
Welcome aboard! |
are there any more?

God... the game's ruined... :O:
EDIT: Just to make sure, just kidding. :) Have a great weekend all and welcome aboard Patchman123, enjoy your stay. :salute: -Teemu |

New Guinea is misspelled New Guineea and Korea is not listed on the map. |
Remember me to never ask a Romanian to draw me a world map.
(just kidding ;) ) |

The name of Korea not listed doesn't bother me too much. Outside of Australia I don't think any country's names are marked on the map. |
Australia is a special case-the name of the continent just happens to also be the name of the country.

the thread has an explanation on how to add or change any name on the map but its not very clear, you will just have to figure it out unless someone can explain it in plain language. i dont think the guy who created it spoke good english, but he isnt around anymore but the mod with the same instructions as his post has is. here is a good download link for it: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...do=file&id=780 the file where the names are is the Campiagn_NMS found in data/ campaigns/ campaign then find the Campiagn_NMS file and its a text file so you open it with windows notepad inside it looks like this: [MapLocation 47] Type=1 Priority=0 Title= Heading=0.000000 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=false FirstRenderStep=true FileName2D=I_Jawa.dds <<< here is one of your misspelled names so just fix it but dont mess up the .dds on the end or it wont show up in the game LocationName= MinObjTerrainHeight=0 MaxObjSlope=0.000000 GameEntryDate=19380101 GameEntryTime=0 GameExitDate=19451231 GameExitTime=0 Font=FPArhi24.dds FontColor=37119 UseDetColor=false ZoomStart=10000 ZoomEnd=1000 ScaleOnZoom=true Scale1024=0.500000 Long=13343420.000000 Lat=-898000.000000 Height=0.000000 [MapLocation 48] Type=1 Priority=0 Title= Heading=0.000000 OnLand=false ShowOnMap=false FirstRenderStep=true FileName2D=I_NewGuineea.dds <<< here is another one of your misspelled names LocationName= MinObjTerrainHeight=0 MaxObjSlope=0.000000 GameEntryDate=19380101 GameEntryTime=0 GameExitDate=19451231 GameExitTime=0 Font=FPArhi24.dds FontColor=37119 UseDetColor=false ZoomStart=4000 ZoomEnd=1000 ScaleOnZoom=true Scale1024=0.500000 Long=17003420.000000 Lat=-658000.000000 Height=0.000000 this is a huge list so take your time and you can find and fix them all. (there are 113 map locationsin the stock file and in his modded file there are 163) as for adding new ones, im sure its probably easy but as i said before you will have to figure that out for yourself or maybe someone can explain it to both of us. |

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7807/newguineea.jpg The background is the same color as the text to avoid any Anitaliasing problems and give a crisp edge to the text. If I change the background color, you can clearly see the name that shows on the map. http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/4234/newguineea2.jpg The listing in campaign_NMS.mis of "FileName2D=" simply gives a filename which in this case is in the Data/Terrain/LocationMaps. So to correct the name on the map, load the .dds into a graphics program and redo the name and alpha channel (selection) and save it. If you save with the same filename (incorrect spelling) then you do not need to change the Campaign_NMS.mis file. If you change the filename then you need to change the Campaign_NMS.mis file also. Misspelling
It was not just the misspelling that bothered me. It was the shortage of identified locations. The response to my question on names posted in the Yahoo 'Silent Hunter' group forum was the link http://files.filefront.com/Map+Label.../fileinfo.html which was a zip file with the files needed to update the map. It still lacks some names I wish were there so I can tell where I am easier but it is an improvement.
I updated my Paint Shop Pro 7 imaging program to work with DDS format but have only looked at it once. Does not look so easy since I know little about image editing. Anyway, I used the above named link and it makes the map better. |
