Dumbist death for a veteran

Oct 22nd, 1942, U-149 attacked a convoy of 5 soviet ships off the Eastern Back Sea. After using all 5 torpedoes to sink 2 ships (including the escort) and wounded another 2, U-149 surfaced to attack 3 unarmed merchant ships with flak gun. After sinking a coastal tanker, Captain Jahn turned his attention to a wounded and stopped Passenger/Cargo. He close to within 100 meter before opening fire. After a few shots, the victim exploded violently, a truck on the cargo deck flew into the air and landed right on top of the uboat. (sorry, not picture available because external camera was disabled and the captain was dumb founded by this inicredible situation).

When the stunned captain come about to realize the perilous situation and start the emergency repairs, U-149 was already motally wounded. 1 crew member died when the truck landed on top of the flak gun, killing him instantly. Another died of his wounds after abandoning ship. They should consider themselves lucky. After scuttling their boat, the remining crew are taken prisoner by the Soviets, sent to Siberia, half of them are never heard from again.

But you didn't die, you were captured. I think after losing my boat to that I would have made sure my crew was safe and gone down with the ship.

Great story, by the way. I love it when weird stuff like that happens.

Point taken. Maybe I should have titled this post "dumbest LOST ever suffered". Anyway, Captain Jahn will be costing the Soviets countless Kilos of Potatoes and Borsch for years to come, not to mention NKVD man-hours for interrogation and torture. In his own way he will continue to contribute, however small, to the German war effort...

In a real world situation, I will fire off one last radio message to Novorossiysk (In German Hands then) and request a rescue. Take over a life boat from one of my victims. And row north to meet the rescue party (or the port). It has happened before, a captain lost his uboat, somehow get back into friendly port and continued on with another boat. Brandi did it.

Just an after thought, My boat is on the surface, only 1 compartment is completely flooded (front torpedo room). The flooding in the only other compartment damaged is under controlled. Is the boat really really beyond salvation?

Sailor Steve 02-23-09 12:46 PM

I think so. One compartment is a lot of water. I don't have a lot of information on whether boats survived that kind of flooding or not, but I wouldn't think it would be safe to dive with that kind of flooding.

That happened once to me as well, but I survived that one (in a IXC). The Type II is flimsier boat I guess.

Using a TypeII in 1942 is hardcore! :salute:

Look at it this way you could have qualified for a Death Card.

GreyOctober 02-23-09 06:43 PM

Hmm...we will need to have some kind of achievements or unlockables for these types of situations. Like,

"Final destination" - awarded on the first stupid death
"Final destination II" - awarded on the second stupid death
"Hexed" - killed by a truck in the middle of the sea.

:O: :hmmm:

Hey, I want a death card for Captain Jahn. :shucks: How about if we let the Soviets try and hang him for war crimes?

goggles 02-23-09 07:17 PM

ive done something similar before i tried to board a burning merchie to get hers papers and right as my commandos haul themselves over the rail the damn thing blows up in a massive fire ball heavily damaging my boat and killing or wounding a good portion of the crew

in hindsight not a good idea:rotfl:
