ASW Group had negative results in search around area plane attack on sub reported yesterday. However, there was a large oil slick 3 by 1k miles observed in the area which may indicate sinking, perhaps of one of the midgets. No debris was found.
Yesterday afternoon, 150 miles to the south of this contact, ANTARES (AaS 3) was attacked by possibly two submarines. SPROSTON (DD 577) proceeded to the scene and made several attacks on sonar and sight contacts.
2 periscopes were seen, 1 of a fleet submarine, the other of a midget. Midget sub was attacked by gunfire and disappeared. Several large oil slicks were seen, but again no debris.
lastnight shortly before midnight, a merchant vessel reported seeing a submarine on the surface at 2000 yards distance in bright moonlight and good visibility. The sub continued on its course to the southwest and took no hostile action.
5 hours later another merchiaat ship reported a submarine but gives no details. These contacts considered sufficiently good to Justify starting ASN operations.
Another contact was made 300 miles east of IEYTE.
