how do you get an s-boat to start a mission with AA gun?
 

every time i do a single mission with an s-class boat it never has any AA gun only a deck gun

all my wiki research says they all came standard armed with AA guns so what am i doing wrong? the year shouldnt matter if they were all came with AA standard equipt.

is this a game flaw?

nobody knows how to add a gun to a sub?

I just checked the UPCData/UPCUnitsData/UnitParts4SClass.upc and there is no flak gun on the first tower. The second tower adds the platform for a gun. So without any testing and just guessing I would assume the mission was written with the early version. In the mission editor there is a box for "Unit version date". If that box was left at its default value (When the sub first became available) no matter what sub was used to write the mission they would all be prior to the 1942 date of the Flak gun. The date of the mission does not matter, it is the date of the "version" of the sub it load. So even if it was written with the Balao (the newest) it would be 1940. And in 1940 the S boat did not have a Flak gun.

Let me do a test and I will edit the post if I am correct on this.

Well, unfortunately the only sub that allows it to go high enough is the Balao and it isn't available until 43, so if the mission is before that is doesn't work. If you do the Battle Off Samar you will see the S-42 has a flak gun. But the S-boats won't allow you to change the unit version. so I guess they don't consider a tower alteration a new version.

well then that means they arent supposed to have AA guns then? :hmmm:

i thought they were missing the AA guns but it looks like there not supposed to be there so it is correct the way the game has it.

20mm platform additions were not added to S boats until 1943. While all of the S-42s received a 20mm platform, very few S-18s received this addition.

Also, the S-18s did have mountable machine guns for anti-air and light craft encounters but these were never finished :( With a little work you could enable them though.

is this realistic was the point of my query, they never had these in real life so it would not be realistic or considered a fix in any way. (not something to include in my game fixes mod)

it would be purely a mod that is unrealistic even though game wise it would be nice to have. as for having it in game im looking into doing it but the s-boats arent set up for it. only the 1943 ad-on tower has mounts for the AA gun so it would need a late war tower to be added as well.
