How to get a new sub?
So when do you get rewarded a new sub? Do you get one new sub for every year or is it influenced by renown or does it just happen randomly??? I searched the forum for an answer but couldn't find it. I did read someone saying he got a better sub after his old one was too damaged...should I just keep damaging my subs so I can get a better one??? How does this all work?
Thanks in advance! |
I wouldn't purposely damage your sub, if anything that may prevent you from getting a new one. The major factor for an upgrade is completing your missions objectives successfully WITHOUT damage. The more objectives you achieve in a single patrol, the better.

You need to complete a couple patrols with success (complete all objectives, sink tonnage) to be offered a new boat - when it becomes available historically. You will get offers for new boat classes only, not let's say just yet another Tambor-Class when you already in command of one.

Yeah, what the guys above said..
All I can add is that I got mine when I´ve completed my objective an and had a really good turn when it comes to sinking tonnage. Got upgraded two times lately and they both happend when I had about 45 000 - 55 000 tonnage sunk. |
If you return with a severely damaged boat, the game suggests you to stop while you are still alive. If you choose to continue, your old&holed bucket gets replaced with another old bucket minus the holes and possibly older.
I don't know how much damage is considered severe, but I know that speed holes and not looked upon favorably.;) |
Thank you for all your replies :)
I wonder: Some of you mentioned that sinking tonnage plays a role... Does that really mean the amount of tonnage, or does it mean the amount of renown you get as a result of the sunken tonnage? In other words: Would it be easier to get a new sub on high difficulty settings (sink the same amount of tonnage but get more renown for it than on low difficulty settings, therefor getting the new sub easier)? Oh and about the damage taken, I assume it's about the state your sub is in when you get back from patrol, right? I mean, even though you suffered a lot of damage during the patrol, if you got your repair team on it before ending the patrol, everything is cool? |
To put it in a nutshell do your job and survive. Eventually you will be offered a new boat. :know:

you do well...and you get one...

If the damage is to extensive, about 40 %.

I came home with 70% hull damage on my IX after first patrol (but with 180.000 tons) and I still get the same sub, same number, on the next patrol with zero hull damage.
Should the damage have carried over into the second patrol, or have I gotten a new sub? Didn't have any upgrades to lose... |

Not a single one, in fact. A bunch of two-ship and once a three-ship formation, mostly T3 Tankers and Liberty Freighters, with a 35.000 North Carolina Battleship as nice addition.
Playing the stock 1.5 german career in 1943 with only external views and map contact updates enabled (which I guess makes shooting somewhat easier) at a total of "80% realism", total patrol time about 2,5 months with two replenishments. Thanks for commenting :) |
Well, nice catch anyway, m8.
