Consuming Passions
Gents,
Having started my first new career in GWX Gold, I have gone back to basics with the little IIA...wonderful to have to take our time about getting anywhere, and being choosey about everything. I forgot how good it was. Anyhow, it has reminded me of a burning question I've been meaning to ask for some time...consumables. Food & Water. I like to keep it a (pretend) issue. A while back I had fun on a mission, where I got stranded in the caribeean, for 6 weeks... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=130990 So what do you think? How long should a little IIA be able to stay out for...foodwise? At the moment I'm returning to base after a month...even if I still have eels. What about the rest of the boats? VIIC is my favourite weapon of choice and I have always kept it to roughly two months. Playing it as an issue, opens up some interesting avenues...such as stocking up on uninhabited islands, sea-fishing for a few days (at risk of air attack) and perhaps trying to sneak into a neutral port. (Remind me to recount the time I sent bernard ashore on the canary islands...to shop...dressed as a woman.) |
There are reports of much longer patrols, but 60-80 days seems about average. Yes, the type II is smaller, but it also has half the crew. And we don't always know how many times the 200-day patrols put in for a simple reprovisioning, which might not have even been mentioned.
I've read of u-boats killing fish for food, and doing other things, but I've never actually read of a u-boat ending a patrol due to a starving crew. There have been threads discussing the option, but the general concensus was that it wasn't something they worried about too much. |
