[REL] Kriegsmarine Target Speed Booklet

I have developed a printable target speed quick reference booklet for those interested in using it.

What this does:

I have taken every merchant ship from GWX 2.1 which makes a viable torpedo target and i have timed them through various ranges of speed from 2 knots through to each ships maximum speed. If you measure the time it takes for a ship to traverse the vertical cross hair of the periscope and locate this value in the booklet, the speed is given for each corresponding time.

How to use it:

1. Identify the target
2. bring the boat to a stop (1kt or less)
3. place the vertical cross hair of the scope slightly forward of the target
4. do not turn either the scope or the boat
5. when the target's bow touches the vertical cross hair start timing
6. when the target's stern touches the vertical cross hair stop timing.
7. look up your time in the booklet and adjacent to the time value read the corresponding speed.

you have just solved the speed of the target.

in a convoy in GWX, once you have determined the speed of ONE ship, you know the speed of all the other ships in the convoy. you may now resume ahead slow and no further calculation is required.

Printing the booklet:

Open the file entitled "TargetSpeedBooklet.doc"

print the manual and bind it with a staple in the upper left hand corner, or with three staples along the left edge (book style)

keep it near your battle station

...or just take the ships length divided by time in seconds then multiply by 1.95 and whamo! Ships speed.

Just point your bow at target and you dont really even need to stop your sub.

But nice chart anyway.:arrgh!:

Thats exactly what i had been doing. :know:

but i thought one day... "hey, if i had already charted this out for every ship... i wouldnt have to take the time to do the calculation... just look at the paper... and theres the speed."

so thats what i did.

perhaps it will help someone

I would change that to:

2. Turn to point your bow or stern slightly forward of the target
3. Set your periscope to bow (0 bearing) or stern (180 bearing)

Or perhaps 3 before 2 might be more practical in use.

That way you can maintain (theoretically any) speed and still not screw up your measurement.
