What is the timeframe you are talking (late 1942, what?). From what I understand a lot of duds at times did result (I forget the sub that hit a merchant with 1 torpedo and disabled it, then fired something like 19 more at a stationary target, all were duds). There are things that can be done to minimize the dud rate, and these are to my understanding: - Use only contact fuse
- Set to shallowest depth
- Use the Low speed setting
- Try to make sure the torpedo impact is not 90-degrees perpendicular to the target, nor "oblique" to the target (I try for 10 to 30 degrees off perpendicular).
Last resort might be to turn off duds, but I'm guessing you--like me--won't do that. As frustrating as a string of duds is (or worse, a dud on a shot you are counting on, like the shot to hit that DD bearing down on you), imagine what it was like in real life. Good luck!
