GTA 4 released!

Finally it came to life. Heard rockstar spent 200 k for its protection against piracy. Can't discuss cracks here: RDP

Nicely spent. I think it appeared to "certain sites" two days ago and seems to be "fully playable" by now. :rotfl:

Yep, but I'm sure it will sell well regardless. I'll have to check and see if my poor old rig can run it or not before I pick it up.

Tachyon 12-04-08 03:10 PM

Poor Old rig? I heard that if you run the game on Medium settings on your PC, it'll be more or less equal to the Xbox360 and PS3 versions. Also, the game was optimized for Quad-Cores, so when I finally get the game.. I'll be able to put my PC to the test.

Apparently, Rockstar says to wait until more powerful PC hardware comes out that could enable us to run the game properly in all it's glory :o . At present though, only medium/high settings are feasible, playing maxed out isn't advisable unless you like slow frame rates.

Regarding the cracks for GTA4 , it appears that Rockstar has put several trapdoors into the game. For instance, car handling is ridiculously poor, camera is SHAKY..e.t.c , or so I've heard if you use a cracked EXE. Pretty neat way to protect the game, but I also heard someone figured out a way around those safeguards as well.

IIRC, the game Godfather had a similar system which prevented you from exiting the car if you used a cracked exe.

Anyway, these new types of protection methods seem to be the way to go. Operation Flashpoint's FADE protection was an interesting attempt but ultimately futile (For those of you who don't know, FADE automatically degrades the performance of the game to a point where it's no longer playable)

I hope I don't get banned for just speaking about Rockstar's anti-cracking safeguards -_-

Well in my case its a question of if the game will even run, the major components of my computer are over 5 years old...

Ouch.... I do hope you have some HD space at least. The game occupies 13 GB I believe. I'll have to clear a tonne of movies and games just to have it on my poor HD :( . But, like the rest of these newly released games.. I'll wait for a while until it's properly patched (Fallout 3 being the rare exception, it's relatively bug free). Rockstar did a lousy job of porting the game to the PC.

It needs a patch and Rockstar confirmed a patch because here in Germany 80% of the customers who bought it yesterday don't get it to run.

Yawn. GTA has always been boring. What else is there after you have taken a bus on a joy ride? I guess some people like dark games. It fits their personality.

I skipped all of GTA and bought Mafia instead. i loved its storyline.

HunterICX 12-05-08 04:17 AM

GTA 1 - 2 where Fun with the sillyness the game was included, loved to play those back then.
GTA 3 was nice due the 3D world.

but the rest of the GTA is overdone, its the same thing but your character and surrounding is changing.

Couldn't agree more, actually (Even though I haven't played 4)

I'm waiting for Mafia 2 to come out next year, hope it's as good as the first one

stabiz 12-05-08 05:06 AM

Mafia is a classic, way better than any GTA. (Havent played number four, probably wont)

Tachyon 12-05-08 07:37 AM

I heard on the grapevine that the famed 200k copy protection scheme of GTA IV has been sent to Davy Jones' locker by a 26kb crack file. Well done, Rockstar! Now if you'd only spent that money on giving us a better port, because from what I've read.. people are crying foul over the poor job you guys did porting the game.
