Turning on the radio

This sounds like a newbie question (nothing wrong with that) although I'm not, but how do you turn on the radio? In SH3 one went to the radio room and clicked on the radio icon, but in SH4? Maybe I'm missing something - but looked in the manual, nada, and in FAQs.
Am using latest versions of RSRD and TM - I do know that one of these takes over the radio section for some calculations, but that one can use the stock gramophone settings to replace the mod settings.
Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else - have looked but no joy.

click on the second to last tab from the right and you'll find it there, along with the gramaphone

Thank you, sir. Wiil give it a try.

Cap'n - worked like a charm...I knew I'd seen that icon somewhere but for the life of me couldn't remember where. Duh. Thanks again.

May I ask a different question? Is it correct that one cannot give seamen a specialty, ie, in torpedoes, or engine room etc as one could do in SH3 (especially with Commander)? It seems that there should be more seamen with some significant aknowledged specialty abilities after 5 patrols, but none are indicated on the crew management screen when time comes for promotion and medals. Or I should say there does not seem any way to create such specialties for individual seamen that logically would come with experience. Again, am I missing something here?

You can give seamen specialty skills once they have enough experience. When you promote them, you will see a box asking you what specialty you would like.

Once again maybe something's showing up that I'm just not seeing. It is strange though, that there is no reference to that action in the manual or in other FAQs - at least the ones I've look at.
Appreciate the help from you both (include Capt Shark Bait...does that mean we're chums, Capt?)

Capt. Shark Bait: You're right... no warm (or cold for that matter) showers. I was referring to Hemingway's use of 'chum' for 'shark bait'. Great 'handle' BTW. But...

kylesplanet: After 7 or so patrols, when I am in port and ready to give promos or awards, no "...box asking you what specialty you would like..." appears anywhere...or am I not seeing something obvious?

reallydedpoet: Yep, I agree re: the manual, but anyone that respects the forum will read and run through all the other references first, before posting on the forum. Then, when it is obvious there is no other answer, you go to the forum and put a question out into cyberspace...and get the real answer.

...oh: I do not get any radio stuff when I click on the radio icon: Yes, I do get phonograph music OK, but no radio connection. There are radio broadcasts listed in the Data/Sound/Radio file but nothing comes through my headset. Is there some secret button to push?

Thanks to all.

if you have the CBS mod, click on the right arrow to advance to that station. it'll do it on its own and you might want this: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=136887 it starts your career before dec. 7, tho you'll still get whatever assignment you're pulled, but you can cruise around till the war actually starts, while listening to the radio and hear the first reports of the attacks on Pearl and Manila.
the nic is for what i figured i'ld be when i first got SH4 always getting sunk and becoming shark food:gulp:

Which radio mods do you have? Did you put any music in them? Are you hearing the stock Washington station?

Archive1 12-05-08 07:17 PM

fred8615: Good point -I did download and install from the forum someone's radio mod for the Data/Menu/GUI/UserRadio.dds - but that should, I would think, merely put in a substitute radio image, not mess up the playability. But maybe it has faulty dials/switches and does not properly initialize the radio sound files. All the sound files are original, BTW. I'll go back to the original UserRadio.dds, restore it and see what happens. Should have thought of that myself...forgot I'd installed the MOD. Thanks.

I just did a forum search using "fred8615" and found all of the earlier posted stuff regarding radio problems. Whoa! Guess others have also had some problems. Certainly looks complicated.
But have started by downloading Radio Station Manager 1.2 and will begin with that and try to follow all the information already posted. No reason for you guys to reinvent the wheel just for me. We'll see what I can do.

kylesplanet 12-06-08 12:32 PM

Archive are you able to promote your crew? The reason I ask is your boat can have too many CPO's etc...

Archive1 12-06-08 07:54 PM

kylesplanet:
Yes, in an appropriate ratio. At first I forgot that there could only be so many CPOs and wondered why some ABs could not be promoted...then the light bulb went off. So yes, I can promote, but cannot assign specialties. Have just started another patrol and will see what happens when I return to Milne Bay (Which BTW is not labeled as such on the nav map; and there are others without labels too. Need a world map to find out what some of these anchorages are called. Shouldn't be that way, I don't think. Maybe someone with some mod experience can figure out how to write names onto the nav map.)
Still working on the radio stuff.

Appreciate the responses.
