Typical:

Guess they want to make sure they see the cricket this year.

I'm sure the people smugglers and illegal fishermen will be busy over the new year!:stare: Not to mention the brothels!:88)

This is nothing but a media beat up.

Every year the RAN goes into Reduced Activity Period over the christmas/new year holidays.

We will still have the majority of our Armidales at full tempo on patrol, one major fleet unit will be deployed on Op Resolute up North, another is in the Arabian Gulf, and each base will have an operational standby vessel designated.

What it means is that the background admin duties on base and the daily routine in harbour can be cut away with, no ships are doing work ups, none are on flag showing visits throughout Asia, none are doing trials off Jervis Bay, etc.

Operations only, so that some bloody hard working people can see thier families for the most important part of the year.
Does anybody think thats unreasonable, or even unique to our Navy?

Last year I came alongside Darwin Naval Base at 2030-ish Christmas Eve with a crew of indonesian fisherman onboard under apprehension.

And things are no different this year, just as every other, over 500 men and women will be at sea patrollling waters to our north and in the Arabian Gulf, most wont be lucky enough to be able to bring a catch back just hours before christmas day.

Ssssshhhh! Don't let the truth get in the way of a crap stroy.

Konovalov 11-18-08 03:53 AM

My biggest concern is that those Kiwi's will now have an excellent riposte to our cruel jokes about their nonexistent airforce.

Anyone for fush and chups?

Rilder 11-18-08 04:25 AM

Quick invade them!

ARR WE BE INVADING AUSTRALIA...
:arrgh!:

Skybird 11-18-08 05:54 AM

They are nuts Down Under, totally nuts. If I ever need to fight a war against a country of my choice, it'll be Australia - with that kind of attitutde, it's easy prey. :arrgh!:

:dead: Idiotic. Totally, completely, 100%ly idiotic.:dead:

I reiterate: :dead: :dead: :dead:

baggygreen 11-18-08 06:12 AM

We don't have too many potential adversaries tho sky, at least not at the moment!

Although, it could be kinda amusing.... "oh, you guys wanna fight a war? well, we're all on leave, come back in 2 months and we can give you a war then"

Do Aussies interrupt battle for daily five o'clock-tea? :) Germans interrupt all action every four years, for three weeks - during football world championship. :D

Schroeder 11-18-08 12:47 PM

You forgot the European championship, Uefa Cup, Champions League....:D

(Thank god I don't give a damn for football):sunny:

Meh... US does sort of the same thing with "Thanksgiving express" opening what is normally restricted air space to commercial carrriers to ease air congestion.

Speak for yourself baggygreen. I'll take a smoko whenever I feel like it mate. I think Kevin Bloody Wilson said it best in "The kid swears a little bit"

I been watching the builders across the road too long.:p

Its funny watching people in the office too, seeing how much time is wasted by the 'important' people in the business on smokos, when us non-smokers have to sit here and work. fail.
