Today's my Saint day, do you celebrate that in your country?

Today is my Saint's day, meaning today is the day the catholic church dedicates to St. Albert (Which is my real name - without the "Saint" of course  ): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albertus_Magnus

In Spain this is nearly as important as the birthday, so all of us who are called "Alberto" celebrate it with the family. Since my first son also has the same name (And my father, and grandfather, and grand-grandfather, and even earlier, he's the 6th already) , I spent my Saint's day morning taking him to the Zoo and buying him a present  , but nevertheless it's our Saint Day, for all of us. Do people in other countries have a celebration on the day dedicated to their name? Just curious :hmm:

BTW drinks are on me today

I'm not aware of such in the UK....but we do have dedicated days to certain saints such as St George, St Andrew and St Patrick etc.

Never even heard of it, however I'll be more than happy to have a drink to toast you

I'm named (middle) after St. Francis but it's not the custom here in the states to celebrate My Saint day.

It is a catholic thing, and since I'm protestant, I don't celebrate it.
I don't even know when my Saint's day is, even though I am named after two, one Apostle and one greek 8th century bishop.

In medieval times (well at least the C15th) in England it was usuall to celebrate the saint's day associated with your name rather than your birthday. It's interesting to see this is still celebrated this way in Spain.
I think it's a kind of fun way of doing things, it stops people hiding their birthdays!

I have no idea what mine would be... but what the hell.

Does Islam have (the equivalent of) saints?

baggygreen 11-16-08 09:32 PM

I thought it did have an equivalent, in that islam places much more emphasis on the prophets than christianity?

FIREWALL 11-16-08 10:22 PM

If there's a Knucklehead day it's named after me. :p :rotfl:

Well not Christianity actually, just Catholicism. I don't believe any other Christian sect recognizes saints.

I celebrate St. Patricks day by getting hammered on green beer. Does that count?:D

Russians celebrate their saint's day more than birthdays. I get hammered every night to celebrate everyone's saint's name. ;)

I guess my name derives from St. John the Baptist which is on midsummers day at least here.

And to answer Hitman's question, I don't think we do celebrate your saint's day. We're mostly evangelical lutherans, we only celebrate beer in all it's forms. Except, I don't belong to any church.
