Need some help with lag

I've noticed some lag when I'm on the watch tower of my boat or when I'm looking at it using an external camera. I'm thinking that either one or more mods that I'm using may be causing it, but I don't really know what kind of PC performance each mod requires. I've never had this lag before when I played GWX 2.0.

Below is a pic of all the mods I'm running. My first thought was it could be either the custom U-boat skin or the Water Stream or the Exhaust mods. Can anyone give me any idea as to which mod may cause laggy behavior in the game?

It would help to know your system's specs.

Otherwise, the only advice I can give is to reduce the number of eye-candy mods, starting with the Water Streams and then Exhaust Smoke. Any mods that use particle effects can cause a slowdown to your framerate.

Here are my system specs:

Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
1Gb RAM
nVidia FX5200 128Mb

I kind of had the same idea regarding the graphics-altering mods. I'll try to disable them and see if it improves the situation.

Also, in the mean time my game no longer loads past a certain point. I load it up through SH3Cmdr, then when I go to start a patrol, it loads and then the word "Initializing" comes on the screen and that's it. The game just hangs there. Then it makes a beeing noise. So I Ctrl+Alt+Del and I see a little window has popped up saying "Menu ID not found: 0x3f010022!". I noticed this started happening after I tried activating Venatore's Tactical Green mod and Compulsory U-boat Headdress mod. Any idea why these would be causing this error?

Those system specs are nearly identical to my old computer. My old vid card was an MSI GeForce FX5200 128MB.

I can tell you this much from direct experience...

That vid card of yours is the primary cause. First, the particle rendering bug in SH3 gives older nVidia cards a fit. You can start by turning the Particle Effects slider in SH3's Video Settings menu to 60 or less. Then make sure you have AA set no higher than 4x and AF to 6x in the nVidia Control Panel. 2x AA and 4x AF will speed things up a bit more.

The other inescapable fact is GWX 2.0/2.1 is a bit more than the FX 5200 can handle. I recommend you use the Lite Harbor Traffic mod for sure. Rendering all those ships will kill your FPS. Also, you'll have to live without the Water Streams and Exhaust Smoke mods. The same goes for the Lifeboats and Rowers. The less eye-candy that has to be rendered, the smoother your framerates.

As for those crashes, it sounds like a mod did corrupt something. That error message is the big clue. The Tactical Green Mod alters the menus in game so there's your culprit. It seems some button or other doodad in one of the u-boat's command menus is missing and the mod may have improperly overwritten the feature referenced. Try disabling the mod and see what happens.

The Tactical Green mod may be conflicting with another mod that alters the menus, like OLC GUI or the GWX Integrated Orders mods. Check the mods' readmes and ask the mod creators if you have any issues.

Always make sure you never apply mods unless you're docked in port between missions. Unpleasant things happen when you alter files that are already in use during a patrol. The only exception to this rule is simple graphics mods that consist of just '.tga' files, like sub-emblems and skins.

Bear in mind that it can take up to 10 minutes or more for SH3+GWX to load on your system. So be patient and go grab a soda or make some coffee while you wait.

One last thing...NEVER EVER ALT+TAB out of SH3, unless you do need to look at an error dialog from a crash. SH3 doesn't like not having 100% control of your system and switching out to another task causes some unexpected weirdness during normal gameplay.

I hope all this rambling helps you.

Well maybe there are too much mods install with JSGME?

Thanks Graf, I appreciate your help :D

I already disabled the water stream and exhaust mods and it did improve the lagging right away.

I looked in the control panel for the video card and aboth AA and AF are application controlled, so I'm guessing that SH3 will set them both at appropriate levels when it's running. I will, however, lower the particle effects to 60 within the game.

I don't mind having some lag while in port. I've always had it and like to see some ships, so I don't mind it being a bit laggy there. I might remove the Lifeboats though as soon as I go on a proper patrol and sink something to see the effect it has on video card performance.

Reading on another thread regarding the integrated orders bars, I found out that it's usually a good idea not to use the mod that comes with GWX if you plan on using another mod that alters the same thing. I turned off the GWX one, however, the Tactical Green still gives me the same error, so now I don't know what else it could be clashing with, so I think I'm just going to stop trying to get it to work.

No worries, I tinker with mods only when I'm back in port and have rolled back SH3Cmdr

Actually, I've never had a problem with ALT+TAB from SH3 before. It has never crashed on me or done anything strange because of that.

Thanks again for your help. I've been reading around and trying various combination of mods to see what works. It's been almost a week since I've installed everything but still haven't started a proper SH3 career. Just too much tinkering around with stuff.

Not really, richardphat. The number of mods isn't so much the issue as making sure they're all working nicely together. Sometimes mods will conflict with each other and may require some hands-on editing to make one compatible with the other.

DirtyACE, I hope you get things sorted out and I'm glad I could be of some help.

I just got through with installing Windows for a fresh setup on my upgraded system a few days ago. I'm having serious SH3 withdrawal and looking forward to getting GWX and my mods installed this weekend!

Sink 'em all, kaleun!

Got it all sorted out, at least I hope. Also managed to tweak a few files to get the Headress mod working with Realistic Crew setting in SH3Cmdr. So far everything is running without problems, but I've only done a shakedown patrol for 4 days since it's early August 1939. The next one is going to be the real deal though.

Hang in there Graph, you'll get your fix soon :)

I second the comments about the video card but I also think you should increase your RAM. Without it I don't think you will ever get good framerates while using any of the typical supermods/graphics mods. I remember when I added RAM to my old machine, without changing anything else - the difference in SH3 was like night and day.

I am running the same cpu, 2.8 p4. Doubled my RAM up to 2gb. Made a heck of a differance, in spite of the fact my video card is a ati 9800pro. Yea, I know it's old, but it still does the job.

this worked for me

I used to let WinXP control my PAGE FILE , and had low Frame Rates with all the mods I use ( external views & the bridge view ). I was reading an artical in MAXIUM PC about boosting your PC performance and they suggesteed to manage the PAGE FILE youself . I tried there suggestion of ( amount of RAM x 2 ) worked great . Frame Rates increased about 2x's . I figured , what the hell , so I tried RAM x 3 or in my case 2048mb x 3 or about 6000mb for the PAGE FILE size , again GREAT ! my settings - minumin 6000mb , maxmum 6000mb .
