Food- will it run out?

Its february 1942 around straights of Gibraltar, and the contacts have run dry.
There have been few cons, but all neutral. I managed to sink Granville freighter, and medium cargo, but other than that- its just quiet.
I still have more than half a tank o juice, but its been more than 3 months since i left the cosy port of St Nazaire, and i have doubts about the food.
I know it is not scripted ingame, but shouldnt i be on the way back by now?
:hmm: It would be nice to have that option in SH3 perhaps?

Is it possible to make such mod?

Jimbuna 10-29-08 11:44 AM

Nope....just bear in mind what a realistic patrol length was and use your judgement to decide when your going to return.

I'm suprised you've still got eels left after 3 months ingame.

Your not hiding outside the pier in your home port are you?

Ive only wasted 4 torps so far- 2 on each ship. Honestly, the waether was so bad for most part of my mission, and now its improved sufficiently to get the decent shot- theres nothing to shoot at. Few neutral, lightly escorted convoys went past, but no English ships at all. I had aircraft attack few weeks back / i lost the man on the gun- stupidly thinking i can take him on :-? /, maybe the ships have been allerted to my presence in the area.:hmm:

meduza 10-29-08 12:10 PM

THat's strange. I always had a good catch around Gibraltar, single ships and convoys. I patroled the area throughout 1941, on east and west of Gibraltar. :arrgh!: Maybe you should go through the Strait and see what's on the other side...

Regarding the patrol length, I've never been out there more than two months, maybe two and a half. Not because I wanted to keep realistic patrol length, but because I was either out of eels or low on fuel.

Jimbuna- i know where to find them.
I have been hunting them here for the last 10 patrols. Nearly 400 000t sunk so far.
Question was- is it possible to have food mod- something similar to diesel gauge- the longer you at sea, the shorter the food bar.
I dont know- thats why im asking. If not possible- shame, thats something i like to see in the game, and i think it would add more realism to it. Im not one of the tonnage freaks, and i plan my attacks carefully- survivability being the priority. I dont mind hunting for suitable targets for months.:yep:

Perhaps that could be added as part of the health mod? When the food runs out, the crew's health and moral could start to drop rapidly.

How much food was there on a U-boat? How long could they stretch it?

No prob matey...I refer you to my answer @ #2 'nope'....not as far as I am aware.

But a workaround may be done by linking it to the fatigue option you are using.

Siara 10-29-08 05:12 PM

Im using GWX + 8 hour fatigue option, but even with it enabled one can stay on patrol for as long as one likes.

Ciao Siara,

I don't know about making a mod, but you as Kaleun have other options besides watering down the gruel. If you're within range of a supply ship (Versorgungsschiff), they'll give you food as well as fuel.

Six weeks was a typical patrol length. With a resupply at sea, you could stay out for three months without austerity measures. In the case of the Monsun U-boats, they resupplied twice at sea to get to Penang (that was the plan at least, until the Allies started sinking supply ships).

Alternatively (& this probably did not happen in RL), you could visit a friendly port, or a neutral one if you're careful, and go shopping!

I think in real life the longest patrol is 100 days +. So you are pushing the envelop. I had one myself (almost 4 months) But I think in a real patrol, the sanity of your crew will probably be out lasted by your food.

Graf Paper 10-29-08 11:23 PM

After two months at sea with no bathing and only one toilet, I'd probably end up shooting a few of my own men.

Siara 10-30-08 03:11 AM

How about this:

"Kplt. Lüth managed to sink ten ships (amassing 45,331 tons) during this long and difficult patrol. This patrol lasted an amazing 205 days at sea! This was the second longest patrol of the war, second only to Korvettenkapitän Eitel-Friedrich Kentrats patrol of 225 days with the crew of U-196."

:hmm:
