Maximum Range at current speed reports
Before I start, I just want to sum up my 'tech know how' with a quote from Oddball in the movie 'Kelly's Hero's':
"I only ride the things, I don't know how they work." Now that you pretty much get the idea of my level of things, I ask this question: Is there a fault with the 'Maximum Range at current speed' reports? I ask, because I got the following reports (simplified for reading sake), while just leaving port. For reference, I'm in a Gato in April 1942 and using SH4 1.5 with RFB and RSRD (current versions). I would select X speed, wait to settle, check report, then repeat: 4236 miles - at 3kts 8281 miles - at 6kts 10565 miles - at 10 kts 4091 miles - at 17kts 2671 miles - at 21kts Now, I have read that the best balance between speed and range is with the Ahead Standard bell (10kts), so speeds above this make sense that I have lower maximum ranges. What I don't understand is the lower maximum ranges at the lower speeds, and hence my question of a fault with the reporting function. :hmm: However if this is the case and the above 'reports' are 'correct' then I shall ask no more, and be at least content that things are the way they should be. I did do a search, but I couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. In the case that I have missed an explanation, I would be grateful if somebody could point me in right direction, or give me a run down on why things are the way they are. I posted here, because of the above mods I using (RFB and RSRD) and thought this was the correct place to put my question. Cheers for any help. |
A quote from Task Force from this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...fficient+speed
"If you go slower than the standard bell [the boat's most efficient speed] you use up more fule cause your motors are useing fule at a higher rate than you are moveing." So, the sweet spot for the fleet boats is about 9.5-10 knots. S-Boats (using RFB) is 2/3 bell which will push you about 6knots. |
The most fuel economy speed is 0.45 * max speed.

That clears up a great deal.
A big thanks to Zephey, who sent me a PM expanding on the quote ncorpuz34 had posted. alamwuhk2a, I'll keep that little formula in mind, handy to know! Cheers all! |
