Deck Gun ammo

This information may be in the manual but I don't have one lol :( so...

What is the different effects of all the deck gun ammos? When should you use one and not the other.

Ive noticed that the computer uses the HE rounds (by default?), I've tried the other ones and can't really see a difference.

I love deck gunning lol :)

-Cheers.

I think alot of that depends on what version of the game you are playing, as well as what mod, if any, you are using. I don't think GWX gives you options for different rounds on the deck gun and it is much, much harder to do damage with it anyway.

No mods just SH3 v. 1.4 or 1.4b

Basic run down on ammo,

HE - High Explosive - Best used on un armored targets, carries the biggest amount of explosive and explodes on contact. Best to aim at the water line of any ship for the best results

AP - Armor Pericing - More effective againds targets that have armor plate (warships) than HE, Explodes after contact, so it can get through the armor, but has less explosive than HE, due to the thicker case it needs to penatrate armor.

SS - Star Shell - Used for iluminating tagerts at night. Best fired at a hight gun angle to give better light to the target. Can be used for attacking ships, but has very little power compared to HE or AP

AA - Anti-Aircraft - A round designed to cause maximum damage to aircraft. Tend to be only used on smaller guns (20mm, 37mm) The 88mm and 105 mm deck gun were not considered to be AA guns and were rarely used in that role.

Thanks book :)

I'll be sure to try the SS rounds at night trick would help out a lot at longish range in the dark.

-Cheers.

Ooops!

Forgot to mention that the star shell explodes at 3000 meters, so you want to make sure that the target is closer than that when you open fire. Otherwise you will alert it to your presence.

Oh and Welcome Aboard Herr Kaluen!! :arrgh!:

Welcome aboard Kaleun....the damage rating for both 88mm and 105mm in Sh3 stock are almost identical.

If your playing stock, try clicking on the AP shell bottom right of your screen.

If your playing GWX, forget it, we took them out of the game.

Hmm i used to play on multiplayer on stock 1.4. Damage from AP or HE dont seem to have that much difference. Only if i use the torpedo effect i will see the splash bigger or smaller

Be careful with the Star Shells especially later in the war when most merchants had armament. One tip is to not use the Star Shells to fire directly at the ship (they do very little, if any damage) but to point them in the air about 2500 meters out on dark nights so you can get a clear view at the target in order to use your HEI ammo on. Once that ammo has started a fire, you don't need star shells. Star shells are limited in quantity in the stock game anyway. Can't get them in GWX. Wish I could get a few in GWX.

If you edit the Config file you can get them back, but why would you????:hmm: Due to the fact the ememy arms itself much sooner, it lights you up to become their target instead of the other way round!:dead:

Very true regarding the enemy, but there are quite a few smaller targets still without armament. A star shell comes in handy if fired properly doesn't really illuminate you but the intended target. Not to say, you want to stick around long but you can fire quicker at longer range with a few star shells illuminating the target. Just adds a little more enjoyment to the game for me.
