Battleship Texas news

I just got off the phone with one of the park managers for the USS Texas. The good news: the BB survived, no damage.  . He described the BB as "very clean after a good power washing." The bad news: the park store was completely destroyed:cry: (flooded). There is no power to the park yet, but they are working on it. The park lost 70 trees.

As soon as they get power, they're open for business.

Exactly! Its a BB for gosh sakes! A little wind and waves take this thing out? Guess that armor plating must be pretty weak if that were to happen!

That tour is an interesting tour by the way. I've toured that thing.

Actually, the armor plating is not the problem. The hull is only 1/16" in spots under the water level. It is so bad right now, they are scared to tow it into a dry dock because it may not make it there. Some are saying that it might be better just to wall off the opening to the channel and fill it all in with sand or something and make it landlocked just as the Stewart and Cavalla.

But yes, she is a grand old beauty. I just wish my knees allowed me to take the hardhat tour like I once could do but did not because my dad would not let me.

Getting old is heck.

What's involved with the hard hat tour? Do you get to see the cool spots that the general public doesn't get to see?

My son and I are planning on going to Oklahoma next summer to see the USS Batfish, maybe we'll swing down that way and check the USS Texas out.
:)

If you have ever wondered about all those areas aboard the Battleship Texas that are closed to the general public, now’s your chance to go behind the scenes.
Participants will be able to see areas of the ship rarely seen by the public. Featured highlights of the tours include the Ammo Handling Room, Drying Room, Boiler Room, Main Radio Room, Plotting Room, Forward Dynamo Room, Forward Power Distribution Room, Central Station, # 1 Turret, and the Pilot House.
