Help with Navy Field

Trying it out for a diversion. However, I am not paying for it as a premium account and frankly, I am so rotten at playing that if I go up against the 'normal crowd' they blast me to heck and back so fast it is no fun.

How do you build your experience level without spending hundreds of hours playing practice missions?

AJ! 09-20-08 10:19 AM

Well thats the biggest problem with starting off at the bottom of the food chain ;)

There is no doubt you are going to get constantly blown out of the water in the early games. Your goal is to get in there and score as many hits as possible (even if they dont do squat)

Your other option is to keep with the bigger ships and score some cheap shots on badly damaged ships (and maybe even get the kill)

To be honist though whenever i play i use the premium account so hanging around for 5 mins then getting some shots in gets some great exp

Blitzkrieg, 1 hit, wait 'till the game is over, free XP

Oh, and get rid of the Auto FCS ASAP

Rilder 09-20-08 04:34 PM

Yeah use manual FCS.

Also don't worry about getting blown up, theres no death penalty.

Non-premium here also.

OK, let me sound a little more stupid.

You mean when your ship is blown to smithereens and you have to get another one it does not cost you?

All you have to do is press the "Repair" button in the shipyard and it repairs your ship to full health for free.

Raptor1 09-21-08 09:59 AM

There is also an Auto-Repair option in the options, so you don't have to click it every time

Don't tell me...

There are a few low-level ship guides in the main NF forum (the one in the USN subforum is written by me). In general, there are a few rules to follow:

1. Use Manual
2. Learn how to fight at range
3. Learn how to not rely on torpedoes unless you're IJN
4. Once you get a second tier Light Cruiser, do try to learn how to use scout planes

Most of the rest is learning how to play tactically.

Also, another note, the free Repair cost only applies to Light Cruisers and below. Once you get your Heavy Cruiser, you'll have to start paying repair costs, but it costs far less to repair an unsunk ship than it does if you've sunk and need to refloat, so not sinking during battle can save you quite a bit of money.

-e- Urgh, forgot that I was posting on a forum with submarine maniacs... :P

I should amend #3 on that list, learn not to rely on using torpedoes on a gunship. They're mostly useless on Light Cruiser and higher ships, but if you're training torpedomen for your submarine, by all means use them. But on gunships (especially battleships), torpedoes = not good for secondary armament.

Oh bugger.

I better figure out how to actually hit enemy ships then!

Is there anyone I can hook up with who can help teach me at the beginning?

Yeah sure, what server you play on and what time you play?

NealT 09-26-08 06:48 AM

Arizona and usually around 1800-1900 or so CST...

I am at this point just playing with the basic missions and test mission using manual fire, and frankly am getting a little frustrated at the fact that the points/credits just don't seem to be coming very fast...

Lord Kelvin 09-26-08 02:58 PM

That's because you're supposed to get the majority (if not all) of your XP and credits from playing vs other players in Area 12 (Area 7 on MO and NY). You'll also learn more playing against other players than you can from missions.

Confirming this.

PvP ftw. :p

NealT 09-27-08 04:54 AM

In that case I guess I will just go out and make a fool out of myself...
