Flibbertigibbet

:-? ..now theres a word you have a hard time working into an everyday conversation, much less one on a forum for subsimmers...:shifty: ...But I'll do my best to not sound like one. Probably fail.:yep:

I got a load of Mk 18s for this patrol and ran into a 5 merchant convoy protected by 4 escorts. Fired two fish @ each of 2 merchants and 1 each @ 2 others...in other words 6 torps at 4 ships.

To my surprize all 6 hit and exploded at ranges from 1200-2400 yds. To my bigger surprize all 4 went down though it took the 4th pigeon 3-4 hours to finally deep six it.

This is a record for me- 4 ships down with manual targeting.

In the Am bright and early I'm sounding the happy hunting horn and will try to pick off the sole survivor and just maybe one of his escorts.. hey..they probably wouldn't want to report into Rabual with the tale they have lost an entire convoy anyway...

I just read Walter Scott's Kenilworth, and there was a Wayland Smith and a Flibbertigibbet character. It's typical Scott to weave such things into his stories.

I knew I'd seen it somewhere, and now I know where. I read it in Prisoner of Azkaban, cursed Harry Potter and its crazy stories of wizardy goodness.

I first heard it used in a conversation from a character (Mrs.Victor Henry) in Woulk's Winds of War TV miniseries a couple of decades ago. It was so intriguing I went and looked it up.

Tie a broom to the periscope as we sail into Bisbane. Got the last turkey this morning for a clean sweep. One of my gaming goals accomplished. Hardly worth the effort though...a 2 000 tonner zigzagging like mad. Not to mention the less than happy escorts who managed to put a few dents in my boat and wound 2 of my crewmen. It was a close thing at that. You can just barely make out my boat position marker dead ahead of that on rushing escort. :o I'm diving like mad..still at only 100 feet......turning hard port...and praying...

Notice too, that the idiot soundman is focusing on a merchant just coming out of Rabual perhaps 5 or 6 miles away...not the current target or that pack of warships trying to rip us apart....:shifty: :nope:

But alls well.....and heck maybe I can catch up with that new target when these bad boys loose my trail...
