I'm no computer expert..no by a long shot...(does it show  ) but it seems to me you have one mule trying to pull a 20 ton wagon over a muddy mountain pass..and it ain't gonna work....at least not very well..or without killing the mule.

Sorry I couldn't be helpful..but that is the impression I got from the post.

Overclocking is well known to cause problems like you describe. Also, your video card is pretty marginal for this game. If you can afford an upgrade ($100 or so) I'd do it.

Rockin Robbins 09-12-08 09:56 AM

Seminole, you hit it right on the head. His "upgrade" isn't even in the ballpark for running SH4. The LEAST graphics card I'd try to run the game on is an nVidia 7600GT. Anything less than that is just pushing a rope.

Uhhh you did disable the 'on board' video when you installed the new card right?

One thing you may be having is driver conflicts as the old drivers were not removed. Switching from onboard to a separate video card can be tricky.

Download the free driver sweeper from guru3d.com or purchase drivercleaner.net

First, I'll describe what you should have done, then I'll explain what you need to do.

When you first swapped, your order of installation should have been.

1. Remove drivers for onboard video
2. Reboot- go to bios and disable onboard video. Turn off palette snoop if on as this will apply to the new card also.
3. Save then shut off computer once it tries to reboot.
4. Install new card
5. boot to safe mode. Decline installing drivers at this point. Check Device manager and make sure only one video card is listed. If 2 are listed still, disable the onboard one. If the onboard chip was ATi or nvidia based, you could have used driver sweeper at that point.
6. Reboot
7. When windows comes up, install drivers

Now, what you need to do is go back almost to square one
1. uninstall the drivers for your new card
2. reboot, go back to the bios and make sure you have memory share functions and palette snoop turned OFF
2. reboot to safe mode, Check Device manager and make sure only one video card is listed.
3. run driver sweeper and remove all nvidia/ati (or other video drivers if you have drivercleaner.net).
4. Reboot
5. install drivers for new video card.

If this doesn't work. Return you system to it's original configuration and start over.

If this doesn't work, take the video card back and try an ATi card. I've seen systems with onboard video where the bridge chipset (talks to the PCi-e or AGP slot) would work with ATi and not Nvidia and vice versa.

Good luck!

Well, I can't give you any advice or help because I have pretty much the same card. I'm lucky I guess - my game runs fine...with all the graphics turned off, it runs fine at about 7 fps.:damn: :rotfl:

For the time being I'm still playing SH3. It runs fine.

i dont know how to turn of the palette snooping and all that

Your lack of knowledge has gotten you into this mess. You stated you disabled the onboard video, but you don't know how to disable shared memory and palette snoop. They are all in the same place, the bios. Some newer mainboards don't have these settings since they have become obsolete years ago. The suggestion above to return your computer to its original state and return the card to get your money back is very good advice for you. Put the money back in the bank, save some more and get yourself a better card and/or computer. With your level of expertese, the current state of your hardware and the mule straining while slipping backwards, you are in a losing battle called "no money and no how." You will NOT enjoy the game even if you got it running. I learned how to build computers by experimenting the way you are, but it cost me a lot of time and money. You may have the time, but do you have the money to throw away on experiments?

I listed palette snooping and memory share in case you are using an older motherboard. As Pv said, they may not show up in newer boards, but this is more common for boards without onboard video to have these missing. Some new boards with onboard video will still have these options show up.

If you want to continue with this, spend some time googling topics on what you are trying to do and then spend even more time reading the how to's on the tech sites you find.

It surprises people to learn it's often easier to get things to work if you build a computer from scratch rather than trying to update an existing one. Especially one with onboard video and audio. Thank God onboard modems have become scarce- that was a real headache.
