Unexpected Visitor
I stalked a convoy through a miserable stormy night, after two failed attempts at attack. Finally by 06:00 the following morning, I was in position. Heading on a 90 degree coarse to the expected path of the convoy, I spotted through the fog the outline of the lead destroyer! Periscope depth!!
On reaching periscope depth, my sonarman yelled out approaching contacts. Up scope! Images of ships emerged from the foggy gloom heading right towards me. The lead Destroyer is close, but clear. It is early war, and detection ability is not at a premium yet. I set up on a Large Merchant, and a Gainsville Freighter. All fish hit, and Two ships go down in awesome GWX2.1 explosive style. I head for the depths to reload. Surprisingly the escorts don't harass me yet. I return to periscope depth with only two torps. available. One Bow, and One Stern. Two fish fired, and two hits. This time the escorts come charging. Down I go to 120m, silent speed. The pinging starts, and the charges follow. Since I can't do nothing but sweat it out at this point, I go to external and watch the drama play out. Then I see an unfamiliar sight. It looks like a sub! I double check to make sure I didn't surface by accident. On closer inspection, I notice it is a British sub, cruising with the convoy. Awesome!! Hats off to GWX2.1, as well as OLC'S GUI mod for awesome manual targeting ability:up: I know this was a long commentary just to say I saw a British sub, but I wanted to share the whole immersive experience!! Good Hunting! |
Great story
I have also encountered a british sub in a convoy and I managed to force it to dive, with a torp right in her bow of course. I know it's torp wasting but for some I wanted to see her 'diving' |

I've seen a British S-Class bringing up the rear of a convoy two or three times now. First time I sank it out of fear that they would turn and I'd have to deal with incoming torps (I was floating right through the convoy from the rear at night...perfect attack and bagged the Fiji CL in the middle). Now I just leave them be.

Since the first time I saw the sub escorting a convoy, I wish to help her dive, but I'm always reluctant to spend my eel on such a target. But I will some day.

I once stumbled upon a Brit sub sneaking off Lorient. Poor bastards. :arrgh!:

The first time I saw one was near Dunkirk in 40' in very rough seas. I was following it in external cam & next thing I know it appeared to seem to dive below the waves. As I followed it down to about 30 meters I was thinking :o  --these things can dive. But alas, I zoomed in a little closer & noticed the deck crew was gone & shortly after I watched it settle on the sea floor with the Nav Map showing a grey sunk icon. I guess it also falls prey to the shIII feature/bug? of other surface ships of chance of rough seas sinking it. (I like to think that it's little 'puter self was just trying to dive regardless of the game's limitations & the deck crew forgot to close a hatch:yep: :D ) |
First, congrats on the successful attack! Early war or not, getting in and out of a convoy with some kills AND your boat is a worthy achievement!
Second, those S boats are out there. I was sailing my XXI towards the Orkneys when a boat opened up on me. At first I thought it was a patrol boat because it was so far away, but it was actually an S-class sub. So I got close underwater and torpedoed it to the bottom. Good times- I think they're worth a good haul of renown IIRC from the other time I bagged one (surface gun duel with my IXB back in 1941). |
