Not so long ago... then nothing

I hope one of my fellow Kaleuns has come across this problem.
I saved above water no ships around and when I load game it goes thru all the start up procedures and after the the (not so long ago...) intro right before the game starts I get the good ol sorry silent hunter 3 has encountered a problem and needs to close. I even tried going to a previous save. Any one come across this before and how to solve. It is really frustrating :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:
Please help!! I defragged, cleaned files, internet off, norton off. What gives?

It sounds like something is corrupt. Either your whole game or just the saves you made.

Try starting a new campaign from scratch. Does it still crash after the "long time ago" message? If so then your game files are corrupt I suspect you need to reinstall.

Otherwise try saving a game off a new campaign. Does that reload OK? In which case it could be something to do with your older save files I guess.

I've been plagued with CTD's myself lately. I'm still trying to isolate the issue myself, but are you around a large amount of ships, or are there a lot of effects going on around you (splashes, smoke, fire)? It may been your CPU or RAM saying "no more" and shutting the game down.

When the pop up appears after CTD click on the blue text " click here "

Helps narrow down the problem

I had this start happening so I did a complete re-install.

With GWX2.1 + OLC (non-GUI) seems to be running without issues.

I had this problem and some how it attributed to rubnis water stream mod on my cpu. When ever I enabled it, it would corrupt any of my save games ];

I do have the same problem. It's coused by searchlights. Reinstall is a good option, ... but for me the last one. CTD problem is popular nowdays :rotfl:. If you're interested what brings me to my knees see http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141551

I used to get a lot of CTD's a few months ago. I completely re-installed the game, mods etc.. and then ran a full defrag on the hard drive. No problems since.

Same here. It's ok now.

Unfortunately, I too was not able to track down the problem. What I didn't try though... maybe backup the saves/careers, reinstall everything (yes, it's a pain...) but reloading the saves then? I had the benefit of not having a large career go CTD on me.

will check it out

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. I would hate to have to reinstall. Its a great game... but also so damn infuriating with the crashes!!

Another option to check

Way back when... before there were a lot of mods for SH3 floating around, I used to have the very same problem with stock SH3. The cause turned out to be locked files in the career/scenario files that SH3 could not access due to some flavor of "Access Denied":hmm:

A possible fix posted at the time was to copy your save game files over to a new folder, delete the save game files that caused the problem, and then restore the originals from your copy. I have to admit that it didn't work so well for me, so I wound up deleting the save game files and starting a new career.:x

Did NOT have to reinstall. If this doesn't resolve the problem then I think the shortest route from here to there is the straight line of "format and reinstall" (borrowed, with acknowledgements to www.microsith.com):gulp:

Have had the same problem many times where I CTD after
career was loaded. I tried a training class and everthing
was fine so I knew it was in career. I started a new one
after I had deleated prior ones and I no longer had CTD.

Well I got it fixed finally. I had to go back 3 saves and the game started o.k. I had to go back to a save before a convoy that i attacked in foul weather. I was still able to hit the convoy and walk away with about 77,000 tons. My last save there must have been an ai sub next to me cause They were trailing the convoy for awhile. Atleast I didnt have to go back to in port. Got lucky. Thanks to everyone for their assistance though!! Great forum!!.

Going back in saves is generally the only way and even then it is not a guaranteed solution.

Kapitan Klaffmuschel 09-03-08 07:47 AM

That info is useful...

I've been experiencing the same CTD on load. The last thing I can see on the display before the CTD is the EXTREMELY faint dials when the saved career is loading. This appears to happen only after I've accumulated several sinkings.

Some details:

Career start: 8/39
Start from SH3C with auto or manual rollback.
Patrol 1 is a one day "shakedown" with the crew to get around the "first patrol" issues. Usually leaves time to get to my actual patrol zone in time for the fireworks and allows for sensor upgrade.

Reload after patrol 1 and update crew in SH3C, embark on Patrol 2.

Thereafter, loading works fine until I sink several ships in the Channel on Sep 3. Save, exit and reload at some future point and it dies horribly.:hmm:

I'll probably wind up wiping out the install and redoing it, as some of the mods I enabled were not really what I expected. I suspect that this is the true root cause of the CTD, and the fact that I can see the dials before the crash tells me generally where the problem is. It's supposed to rain cats and dogs here on Saturday so I can afford to spend that time dealing with that.

In the meantime, thanks for the info.
