Nandi flies to Georgia

Above is Nandi, a Manta Ray that was caught in the shark nets off Durban a year back. She was kept in our aquarium uShaka Marine, the largest in Africa, but due to her ever increasing size this became too small for her.

It was decided to fly her half way across the world to Atlanta, Georgia to be housed in the 6.3 million gallon aquarium, the Ocean Voyager Gallery. This is the first time ever that an aquarium in the States has housed a Mantra and becomes only 1 of 4 aquariums in the world to house such a huge animal.


"Nandi, who measures more than nine feet across and weighs approximately 456 lbs, flew 9,000 miles on a chartered 747-200 aircraft from [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]Durban[/color][/color], South Africa through [COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important]Cape [COLOR=blue ! important]Verde[/color][/color][/color], Africa, to Atlanta. The manta ray was under the care and supervision of Georgia Aquarium and uShaka Marine World professional staff and maintained by a highly advanced marine life support system."

I would love to have more details on the "support system' that was required in keeping her alive during the plane trip.

Cool, that is a pretty sting ray!

It is a Manta Ray, not a Sting Ray.

Correct. There is no 'sting in the tail'. In fact, as far as I know, the only defence these rays have lies soley in their size and appearance.

Lol, I first thought Nandi was the last name of some indian or other politician who flies to Georgia in regards to our favorite international crisis.
