is it possible to refuel at sea durring a patrol through a U-tanker of some sort? Or must i use a mod to get U-tankers?

in the stock game - no. you cant use a U-tanker.

there is a "milk cow" mod which puts U-tankers in historically accurate locations, OR you can download and install GWX 2.1 which has not only the U-Tankers, but also a hand full of historically accurate covert resupply ships in various locations around the theatre.

Yep You got it. I dont know where the mod is but I know they come with GWX.;)
