Canoe Adventures
Just curious of some of the more memorable incidents any fellow type II
enthusiasts have had in SHIII? Myself-Iv'e seemed to spend most of my time in game during the early years bobbing around the North Sea in the mighty IIA or with Black Sea patrols in the IID as a runner up. With the "duds" & only five torps it can lead to some frustrating moments--like stalking a large freighter for days that I've already hit with 2 torps (& none left in the boat) knowing that it is never going down even though it's been half submerged for days:damn: . But with only averaging a few small or mid-sized ships a patrol it keeps my tonnage at a realalistic level & makes the occasional windfall that much more enjoyable (like maybe bringing down a large tanker or freighter & damaging a second smaller merchant & slipping away in one of the rare early convoys I can reach in the Canoe). Some of my more recent incidents have been re-enacting Prien's Scapa raid in the fall of 39'(but w/ the IIA & only finding a troop transport there), unrealisticly taking a cruise to New York in Feb 40' to catch a broadway show (by traveling at 8knts & refueling at the Belcher off of Greenland), & in my last patrol By actually sinking the Nelson near Narvik. (though the stars were aligned just right for that one--conducting a picket line in a narrows of the main fjior to Narvik during Wesseleburg & having it practically run over me). The death knell of the Nelson: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...08_1759-n1.jpg |

The long cruise--Refueling just in time:

:o How in the land of great jumping bejabbers did you get a Type II to New York? Old York is pushing the limits for that thing!

Had a quite a few interesting moments with good old type II.
One is that i survived depth charging in shallow waters by 3 destroyers. She took some damage, but managed to bring me home. Other is Prien-like penetration in Scapa Flow in early 1940, got lucky and sunk illustrious fleet carrier for 23 000 tonnes. Here is some one shot kill: http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/3...eiiaci9.th.jpg |

Either that or you just uncheck the "limited fuel" option. I'm assuming that if you do that you could go as far as you wanted. Nice pics. One of these days I'll take a canoe out...maybe the Black Sea; never been there before.:hmm:

Well, maybe on Mondays. Or at 0200 on Tuesdays. |
Actually I never messed with the cfg files and I had "limited fuel" checked. All I did was set my speed manually at 8 knts (read in a thread a while back that that was the most fuel efficeint speed for A type II) and kept it at that speed the whole way. Came out of the Kiel canal-made a straight diaganal line to go between the Shetlands then straight across to the Belcher anchored off of Greenland. I was about drifting on fumes the last few miles to the refuel ship:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/g...008_130-y1.jpg After docking at the Belcher (I think that's the name of the supply ship at greenland in 40')--I hugged the Canadian coast straight to New York. Granted I don't believe I would have had enough fuel to make it back to the supply ship so I cheated a little & teleported back to base from the US east coast. Now the goal is to try to refuel the mighty U-17 at one of the supply boats at Southern Spain then try to sneak by Gilbrater and sneak through the Suez canal to form my own ad-hoc "type II monsoon fleet":arrgh!: @Rg370---gotta love those 1 torp kill shots in the II--let's you stay out a little longer. |
Tourists! :nope:
:rotfl: |
Thats another nice thing about using the IIA-- it usualy is in early 39' & 40' so it's a little easier to remain undetected. I had stirred up a hornet's nest after taking out the Nelson w/ 7 destroyers hunting & pinging me but due to the thankfully stormy whether snuck away without 1 detection. At least the Narvik mission could be considered realalisticly possible--I think I recall reading that BDU did assign some of the coastal boats for the Nowway invasion.
From Mikayl it sounds like getting past the rock with the canoe is possible--wish the game modeled a strong current there so one could just float through underneath w/ the currents like Werner described in his book. The Suez might be another story but maybe the boys will be up to it:hmm: . On a related matter--does anyone know if there are any skins out there for the IIA that covers up the pre-war (red&white) "sunk" buoy on the IIA or is that more of a 3d model thing. Due to that--thats' why I like to use the red hull skin--just figuring it was a pre-war boat that the shipyards forgot. |
Great Stuff!!
My all-time favorite boat is the TypeIID: ......With their tight turning capability, and 25 second dive time, ...they are just the ticket for getting in and out of tight places. I know that "Harbor Raiding" isn't exactly "Historically Accurate", ....but it is fun! ....And besides; ...I have already departed from reality by implementing Captain Von Keldunk's "IID2Flakship" mod. That 37mm on the foredeck is perfect for all those smaller targets that aren't really worth a torpedo! Great Mod!! http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...roll/NEW2A.jpg klcarroll |
You finally got that 37mm

Got into Loch Ewe, in my IID in November 39, wiggled my way over sand bars only 4m under my keel and got between HMS Nelson and the island in the middle of the loch. Sank her with 3 eels under the belt from 345m and none of the destroyers could get me cos the carcas of Nelson was blocking the way! ;) one did get round the end, but could't turn fast enough and ran it's self aground. I made a sharp exit and sank a small Merchant on the way home with my last eel.
|
I have asked this before, but forgot all that was explained to me:oops::oops::oops:how do I put the sixth eel back into a TypeIIA/D:hmm:really do miss that little extra;)

My view about this U-Boat type II, very hilarious because the size and apearence...but at the same time is very efective and the most important he enters here the "oldest brothers" dont go...and for that have my respect!
