Freetrack any good?
I have a webcam now and was wondering if freetrack is anygood as I can't afford track IR.
What is the easiest way to make an led marker? Is it just a case of hooking an led up to a battery? |

do you use freelook or freetrack. Freelook requires little led device to be made freetrack doesn't.

I use FreeTrack, and while it doesn't exactly require LEDs it works a lot better with them. Just like TrackIR it doesn't work well in all lighting conditions without something with LEDs. The Freetrack forum has plenty of information on making your own LED thingies, so I'd suggest you look around there a bit. If any questions remain after that I can help you, since I've already made my own cap with IR-LEDs. It's a direct copy of the "commercial" cap design I linked below. I assure you, it actually works
One alternative is to buy a ready-made LED cap from here or you can also use this with Freetrack. It's practically the same as the self-made things. |
A new version of Freetrack released
A new version of Freetrack(2.2) has been released, and according to a few quick tests I ran tracking is now much smoother and more precise than before. Wiimote is now supported too, which supposedly brings you TrackIr quality or better tracking.

I've just paid for the full version of cachya ($15). Which is working pretty well, I don't have anything to compare it with though.

I tried Cachya too(demo version), and it worked surprisingly well for a completely "passive" system(no leds or such). I didn't get the full version because I already had a working Freetrack + 3-led cap setup, but it definitely looked promising. It's hard to really compare the 1-axis limited demo to anything.
