[WIP]Ship Skins
I decided that i didnt like the ship textures that much, imo there was too much noise and when i checked this with the real life they seemed to be painted pretty well. So i started to make some new skins for the ships my first being the Battleship Iowa and Yamato. Although they are still WIP and i still need to add in a few details id thought id showoff what ive done so far. Im going to add in the hull numbers and stuff like that.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4585/bb61hp8.jpg Dunno what that weird mark is near the hull number cant seem to locate it in the texture files.. :/ http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/261/bb61azp1.jpg http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9616/bb61bmk4.jpg Anyway what u think any suggestions? I think i need to tone down the shinyness and add a tiny bit of noise. |
yes ! exellent work , the "blue" battleships are not realistics, and not beatifull ! ( fuso, iowa, ise ) good  !

Your Iowa skin looks great! However, I think that maybe it should not have the number on the hull since there were other ships in the Iowa class. It may look weird to see two or three Iowas all with the number 61 on them. :88) I'm not criticizing or anything, just making an observation. I wanna see your Yamato skin, too! :yep:

It looks like a reflection of the bow wave to me. Maybe it is caused by the ambient occlusion map. I think you should abandon the hull number. I’m not sure but I believe they didn’t have these numbers during World War Two. http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/i...0/g235080a.jpg And if then the number was rather small. http://photos.igougo.com/images/p604...S_Missouri.jpg As far as I know all Iowa class battleships had a camouflage pattern during the war. So you may want to use one. See here: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-co-mk/camouflg/usn-wwii/3--bb3.htm or here: http://www.shipcamouflage.com/usn_bb.htm If you want to keep the camouflage to a minimum you may want to consider Measure 22. http://www.tamiya.com/english/produc...ouri/paint.gif Then you have both: A rather clean ship and still a historical accurate appearance. Then I want suggest to use a high resolution for the textures like 2048x2048. Then you can implement amazing amounts of details. Have a look at OakGroove high res textures for the Deutschland class CA. I don’t know much about American battleships but the portholes look a bit blank being just a black hole. You may want to add hatches and channels, at least on the structure. Well just what I think. |
Ok thanks for the suggestions everyone, il remove the hull number and add in a camo scheme.
Edit* Ok added the stock O01.dds file which contains the camo and stuff, might improve it but it seems ok i think. It also fixes some of the shadowing like the bridge etc. http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5872/iowacamoej7.jpg |
could you skin the KMS Scharnhost and Bismarck?
|
Sure, atm im trying to work out how to do my own Ambient Occlusion so i can sort out the lighting and shadows stuff. I just finished up doing the DD Fletcher but as i had to edit the ambient occlusion stuff to remove the colour scheme i lose all the shadows which are really needed.
Btw heres the Fletcher, as you can see i really need to sort the lightmaps/ambient occlusion textures. http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/4...tcher01gq9.jpg http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/5450/fletcher02fc3.jpg Still a WIP as i gotta add in doors and other bits of detail, i might change the wood deck to metal deck. Did Fletchers have wooden decks? I proberly remove the hull number is well. Edit* Well i downloaded the 3ds max demo and tried making my own O01 file for the fletcher and followed this tut http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=136354 i got my O01 texture ok, but when i saved it to the O01 for the fletcher it looked all bonkers and messed up which what i expected as it didnt seem to fit the same as the stock one. So yeah def need some help on this matter. |
looks grerat. Not to ask alot but, could you after the Bismarck and Scharnhorst, work on my SS Horai. I wanted a black hull with black or gold stacks.
|
The Fletchers did have metal decks, not wood. Also, once camouflaged the battleship's wooden decks were painted over.
Here's a link to a photo of a Cleveland class light cruiser and you can see how the camo continues over the horizontal surfaces: http://mysite.verizon.net/resttsdu/s...1_LC_1280x.jpg What you've done so far looks great. Can't wait for the release. |
Yeh thats what i thought (about the destoryers deck being metal ingame) as the stock textures also had them wooden so i just replaced the wooden texture decks with wooden ones. So anyway ive added the metal decks in etc.
As for a release date well once ive done enough ships ie most of the warships and merchants both sides etc il release then as one big pack. Makes easier than releasing one at a time. As for the Lightmaps well it seems that these wont be used as im replacing these to remove the camo schemes and add me own in. Eta on release about 1-2 weeks. Demonz :arrgh!: |
How is it going?
