Some pictures from interesting February 1940 Patrol

While leaving Wilhelmshaven I had Fuhrer himself saluting me (:D I wonder if it is the original UBI skin or GWX team's easter egg but I find it hilarious).:

It seemed to be a really boring patrol until close to the British isles I ran into taskforce consisting of HMS Hood, HMS Rodney and Revenge class and about eight or ten destroyers. I was really greedy and tried to get all capital ships... Well, Revenge went straight to the bottom: two eels (one hitting the forward magazine) and it happened so fast that I forgot to snap a picture. Hood after getting two torpedoes (another missed) to her side started listing fairly deep but didn't stop just slowed down:

Rodney was hit by two almost misses to her aft and stopped dead in the water:

Both capital ships were surrounded by dense screen of destroyers and I got heavily pounded by them smashing all my bow torpedo tubes and attack periscope. With no eels in the tubes and on silent running I got depth charged for almost eight hours. I managed to get away from the destroyers, surfaced to the periscope depth and found the Hood getting away from the scene with probably 8 destroyers protecting her. The Rodney was sitting half way submerged without any protection in the water but would not sink. I managed silently crawl back and gave her coup de grace from my aft tube (the only one still operational).
Overall, sinking 67,000 tons in this attack is not too shabby... :D Too bad that Hood got away... :damn::

On my return to the port I (for the first time in the game) saw German battle ship outside of the harbor. Meet the Hipper:

This was one of the most interesting patrols I've had in a while. Just thought I'd share it with you....

BTW if you look at the picture of Rodney, would it be possible that in real life she wouldn't sink at this point after more than 8 hours?

Great pictures! That was one hell of a patrol.

Outstanding patrol...well done! :D

Yeah, it was just the right mixture of fun/fear/excitement. I can't believe how you can get so immersed in the game. GWX rocks!

Funny thing is that this patrol looked like it was gonna suck before I intercepted this taskforce. As you can see in the captain's log I was getting desperate: the target right above the Revenge class was 17 ton schooner (destroyed by gunfire BTW)... ;)

I just wish that GWX4 was out already. Even though I consider SH3 superior to SHIV as far as playability and immersion in the game goes going through mission like this in SHIV's excellent graphics engine would be just off the hook...

Great pics!

I don't want to detract from your experience - and none of what I say is meant to do so - but I've always found the disconnect between the number of torps required to sink a capital ship and the number for some crappy merchant to be a major issue.

Capital ships had massive buoyancy, dedicated and well-trainined damage control teams, large numbers of pumps and other damage control equipment, large numbers of compartments, torpedo 'bulges', ability to counter-flood etc etc: in other words, they were designed to take quite a bit of damage AND survive it. Most merchants weren't compartmentalised to any great extent, their transverse bulkheads were often weak, they weren't drilled in damage control, nor were they really well equipped for it, yet you can put 2 torps in a large merchant and it mightn't sink immediately, while the same 2 torps sink a capital ship.....NUTS!!!!

Most merchants sank from a single torp, and most within 20 mins of being struck (and often much more quickly). Most light cruisers sunk by torps only took 1 to do so. Most capital ships - especially battleships - were much more difficult to sink. I think the sim does a poor job of handling this difference, although I believe it is largely due to the limitations of how SH3 assigns damage/durability.

Despite all that....great effort (especially surviving the 8hrs DC attacks  ).

Just curious - and not implying anything about the effort - what sort of difficulty do you run at? I don't think I'm at a skill level where I'd get shots off at those beasties so effectively!!

Great effort, especially surviving the counter-attack! In real life, that much damage to the RN would probably be the perfect time to let the German surface fleet dash out for a sortie to the Atlantic.

Pah!, beginners luck :p

I agree with all you said here and I believe but if you take a look at the amount of torpedoes I have used it (sort off) makes sense: Revenge sunk after being hit by only two, but as I stated one of them hit the forward magazine and literally tore here apart - I got lucky. I believe that it is possible even in real life. Hood got two torpedoes and it didn't even phase her. She was listing fairly heavily but didn't slow down and escaped. Rodney here is the most unlikely sinking: two torpedoes in the very aft (they both almost missed) and then coup de grace to the midsection. I agree in a real life it is most unlikely to happen... :)
To answer your question: I am running somewhere around 65-70% realism. Can't remember exactly.

Jim, don't let the amount of posts fool you. I have been playing sub simulators since Silent Service II. I just recently discovered Subsim....
