SH3 Commander RandomFiles? Sailor Steve u around?

Since my harddrive crashed couple of weeks ago ive been busy trying to get some of the mods back I used to have stored for a rainy day and have come across this thread

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...r+random+files

Very interesting these random files...Reminds me of EAW stab filemanager etc...

I too have been looking at these files but like someone stated its like thinking through a fog I almost see it but dont

I kinda get the idea of the file structure but what would be really handy is a Jpeg of the files installed in a workin version

also I guess the Date files you edit in the dates in the YYYYMMDD format to activate the files or something?

Sailor Steve Ive read some other threads on my mod quest where JS gave ya the heads up ? Wanna post a Jpeg of ya setup ? Or any one else out there...

:hmm:

Ah now there was the best combat filght sim ever IMO! TK's masterpiece!:yep:
I hope this is of some help, lets say I have seven sound files that I would like to be randomized each time I start a new patrol, what I do is to place them into the following:
Random\0\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\1\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\2\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\3\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\4\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\5\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\6\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Random\7\Date\19390901\data\Sound\Depth charges exploding from submarine.wav
Each time I start a new patrol from the date shown it will randomly pick one of the files from 0 to 7, these folders can have any number of files, just place in the appropriate data\ folder.:yep: I think the date stays in force from that time on unless it encounters the same file/files with a later date, then that becomes active, but only within the random number (0 to 7 in example) chosen at the start of patrol, someone may correct me on this though!
Cheers.

Yes. You can also use JSGME to activate SH3 Commander files/mods etc. Just install JSGME into the main SH3 Commander folder.

Yea EAW was a excellent flight sim...

must have played that on and off for like 6-7 years I had a sweet set up with terrain - skin changes etc

:yep:

Yeah cheers Reece im wondering does the files youve listed have just one sound file in each? or is it that there all in one folder? looks like theres one in each if im reading this correctly?

So im guessing if thats right I can stick other files into each of those folders as well with the appro dates to fire them up? Like crew skins u-boat skins etc

Ive found another thread where JScones went in to some more detail eluding to how he runs SH3Commander with like a full on changes hell you could even change the look of the ocean as an idea

Yea mate ive got ya depth charge files ill try them in the order youve posted

Definitly starting to get the JGSM feel with ya info ill have a tinker in the weekend...very EAW stab mate

:D

Badger Finn 08-07-08 07:45 AM

Thanks Gairith youve been a life saver this week

Cheers for the Jpegs mate

Yep as I was thinking and now its as clear as day

Many Thanks

:D

So you guys are running JGSM from inside SH3Commander?

:hmm:

JGSM from inside SH3Commander?
Definitely not! Gee that would lead to total Kaos!:yep: I know it looks like Gairith has done that but I wouldn't try it!!
You pretty well got it though, in my example I had 7 different versions of the same sound file, you can do the same to almost anything this way from skins to crew uniforms, movies, music, load screens etc etc, it's a great partnership to Silent Hunter III itself!

Badger Finn 08-07-08 09:23 AM

Yes reckon ive got it

the posibilities are real interesting

cheers Reece

Not sure about "from inside" but it's possible to use JSGME to install different files into SH3 Commander. You might have several sets of Random files, or sub-sets of Date files. Rather than cutting, pasting and deleting, JSGME allows you to include/install or remove/deactivate files and folders in SH3 Cdr very simply. The two are totally compatible.

Just copy JSGME.exe into the root directory of SH3 Commander; run it once to create the Mods folder there; run a shortcut to "JSGME SH3 Cdr" to your desktop and you can use it to include, or vary any of the changeable SH3 Cdr files and folders you wish.

Badger Finn 08-07-08 09:41 AM

I now see why JScones was reluctant to explain the true potential of SH3Commander

Ive had a fair bit of experience in utilizing others mods over the years with a few tweaks here and there from myself but unless youve got some modding time under ya belt it can get real confusing quick

@ Von Manteuffel you know what I follow your train of thought as well

now the other older threads make sense as well

the fog has cleared

very cool

Jaesen really is a force to be reckoned with. JSGME is a superb piece of work, but SH3 Cmdr is sublime.

The only problem I have is that when you use Date files, the results in game are cumulative. i.e. a Date file for 02091939 doesn't overwrite one for 01091939 - the contents of the new one is added, while those of the old one simply stay in game.

When you make your option choices in SH3 Cdr. - e.g. fatigue model - your choices do overwrite the game files, but as far as I'm aware, Date files and Random files don't overwrite, they add.

I've spent months looking for a way to end Date files, or overwrite existing ones with later ones but to no avail - and I'm not a programmer.

JSGME inside SH3 Commander is a separate install from the JSGME in SH3. Works in the same manor with a different file structure.

Example:

\MODS\ModName\data\Menu\Gui\

\MODS\ModName\Date\19390901\data\Menu\Gui

or
\MODS\ModName\Random\0\Date\19390901\data\Menu\Gui

Can you list an example of the file you are trying to "end"?

Sailor Steve 08-07-08 11:46 AM

Sorry I got here late!

@ Badger Finn: The guys you have already been talking too are a lot more savvy than I am about this sort of thing. They will probably be the most help.

@ Reece and von Manteuffel: I have all the dates set to the same - 19390101. I use the Random folder only for files I want to change at the game's startup. A while ago, with JScones's help, I did the 'Randomized Loading Screens' mod. It had 100 folders and put up a different loading screen every time you start the game. It also randomized the dockside band music (9 different songs) and the Navigation Map background (three different screens).

For everything else, especially date-based gramaphone songs, I use the Date folder, and I'm pretty sure it does drop the old stuff when new stuff is installed. At least the 'Radio' file changes, since it has the same name it has to.

With skins etc they have the same name and overwrite the old so only the later one ingame
Can be same with sounds and cfgs etc
As long as name same the new overwrite the old
