Radar won't turn on?

Silent Hunter III Radar Issue - Single Player Mission
Type XXI - 1944 Veteran Crew (Normal Realism 29%)

I am playing the Single Player missions, the one that says Type XXI, 1944 - the type XXI has been completed ahead of schedule, ect....

I have a man stationed on both the Hydrophone and Radio/Radar rooms. I press H, and I have access to all options, the 3 boxes for different modes are available.

The Radar man has no such options. He is there, I can see the Radar unit in the station, but the 3 Mode boxes are greyed out. I have tried using it at Periscope depth, and diving deep and still no luck.

What could I be doing wrong?

I am using Stock SH-3 with the 1.4b patch.

Thanks for helping a newbie....

:)

I believe that you need to be on the surface for radar to work.

Thanks!

I finally figured out part of it, I guess if you are close to enemy ships, the Radar operator automatically turns the Radar off to keep from being detected. I think this is what was happening with that particular mission as from the start, there are many ships closeby.

As a test, I loaded Scapa Flow, and you do start out on the surface, and I noticed that the radar works perfectly. As soon as the Radio man spots a ship or gets close to one, the Radar goes off and Hydrophone guy takes over.

At least on the easy settings it's this way.

Thank you Sir,
Beermaster

You can turn on the radar with deck awashed too, but you will definetely stay half-blinded, unless u will make often turn arounds to see whats going on at your back, or u may use your persicope. Anyway staying awashed for long time is a risky call..

But I often experiencing radar shut downs while on surface but in heavy seas, since when the big wave come and the bridge goes underwater, radar would simply switch off and u have to turn it on again manually.
