Tragic News, Folks (there's also happy news)
Francesco Chiarello, one of the last World War I veterans, died June 27th at his home in Italy at the age of 109.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances...nico_Chiarello The happy news is that Fernand Goux, age 108, has come forward for France, stating that he fought in World War I for the French (meaning that Lazare Ponticelli was not in fact the last French veteran of the Great War). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernand_Goux |
That would make him, what 14 when the war started, 18 when it ended? Young but within the realm of possibility i suppose.
It reminds me of the time i met a civil war "veteran" back when i was a kid. The guy was ancient and certainly talked the talk but later on we worked it out and figured he was about 6 when the war ended. Kinda young, even for a drummer boy. |

Remind me to tell you about my time at the Chosin Reservoir. |
I'll just be getting my rather dusty Redcoat out of mothballs.

Yet - young. They always lied about their age back then.

But Wikipedia and the Internet wasn't available to us back in the 1960's unfortunately... |
