More firewall problems - please help

Hi, I had too many problems with COMODO, for some reason even though I set some apps to not allow access everytime the apps are launched they still try to access the web, I keep getting trojans & my system is slowing down, I had no trouble with Zonealarm worked a treat! but doesnot run on SP2 or 3.
Well I had to re-ghost again and have tried Syquest, but now I can't run a network, all attemps to get it going have failed, the help files say to give access to a number of services, however most don't exist, I think that SP3 differs here & Syquest, being a few years old don't cover!:-?
This is so frustrating, don't know where to turn!:damn:
Please Help!

Tried Tiny Personal FW, but is a 30 day trial!:-?
Is there a Zonealarm version that will run with SP3?

Sorry to hear that your firewall problem remains unresolved for a long time

I believe the current version of ZoneAlarm works in Windows XP SP3 perfectly, as I have installed it on my desktop and it works perfectly for a month.

COMODO is a great firewall if you can endure its large number of alerts :-?

When being in such a situation, I do not care for wonder ful fixes and mircales anymore, but reformat and reinstall for principal reasons (for I would have lost trust in anything less).

Sorry to hear about your problems, but over here Comodo runs perfect, and very safe: so far I still wait for the first opportunity of Comodo raising a single problem. I assume the problem is not Comodo, but something with your system, and/or installation.

The best free one I have come across is the Sygate Firewall.

There is also a Pro version available if you PM me.

Are you guys kidding, or haven'T you read the manual? when installing, or using new software for the very first time, rightclick the icon in the task bar and switch the "Defense + Security Levels" to "training mode". the firewall then learns how the software works or how the imnstallation is doijng - and will keep that in mind. After installation nor first run, switch back to "Safe Mode". The triggers of your false alerts will be remembered and let the software run without causing alerts. That'S why it is called "Training mode". ;) Note that it only affects your own software and its behavior, it does not compromise your security with incoming signals, so don't worry.

the "Firewall Security Levels" should and could be left to Custom Policy all the time.

@Reece
What do you mean Zonealarm doesn't work with SP2 or 3 of course it does, well when i use to run ZA it worked fine with SP2 dont know about 3 but it should. I bet windows uninstaller hasn't deleted all the registry entrys so when you try to reinstal ZA it starts complaining. if you can delete the entrys your get ZA back on. I use Uninstaller 2008 which rips your harddrive looking for every single piece of the software your wanting to uninstall and makes sure its complelty off your drive when its done.

Oh is this a reformatted drive i remeber you mentioning something about reformatting your drive, then very strange ZA wont install on a clean drive.:hmm:

Otherwise you can try out the shareware version of "Your uninstaller" here: http://www.ursoftware.com/download.php

I only put it on my system week ago.

I was bugged once on my anti virus, ad-ware,spy-ware updates but now is all cool. Today I updated Quick Time and a few other features, most likely I will not be pested next time there updated. ;)

This was the major problem in the first place, I loved it but was version 4 & Truevector just caused BSOD with SP2 or 3.:yep: Didn't know if later versions had the same problem, or even if they still have the free version! Will do further checking.
@ Steed, Skybird, & Peterloo, when I installed COMODO I opted for the basic protection, there were 2 other added protection methods, but opted not to use, maybe this was the problem, also I ran SecuRom uninstall app, & this may have caused the problem, some of the problems included SHIII (not IV) would just come up with "Silent Hunter III has caused a serious error & must close" with modname:Sh3.exe, I reinstalled, just got the same, also the PC was running slow & Elvira & Ad-aware showed nothing, wich I suppose may prove the firewall was working!
COMODO is quite complicated & shore do miss the list of Applications that can be modified, they have a sort of list but I still find various apps trying to update or ask permission to run, over and over, one such is System, like I said, already has allow ticked.
@ Jim, thanks for the offer, at this stage I will try searching for a later version of ZoneAlarm & try that, my last Ghost image has COMODO early install when everything was going ok so I can always go back!:yep:
Thanks All again! Always get good advise here on SubSim!:D

Well, the newest version is version 7, and if you insist on using version 4, which is a product 3 or 4 years ago, I'm afraid that the problems lies on the compatibility rather than any other problems on your system

The newest version is still free. :D
Download @ http://www.zonealarm.com/store/conte...e_firewall.jsp

I understand that some of you say that there is remember option and maybe you have get used to that large number of alerts. This is just a personal preference. I don't recommend using it for NEWBIES since they would be impatient and allow all connections to be made without a second thought, therefore nullifying the protective effect of the firewall (which is to filter network traffic)

Reece 06-28-08 08:58 AM

OK, I tried ZoneAlarm v7, all seemed to go ok at first, I opted for manual setup of applications but once in the list was full with every exe on the PC! I then started to remove some including zonealarm itself from the list, by simply highlighting the app and deleting, this can be done in version 4 with no problems, in this version however each one I took out I no longer had access rights to run the app any more!:-? I then rebooted & because ZoneAlarm and many other apps were removed from the list, would no longer run! I couldn't even uninstall Zonealarm! All I could do was re-ghost again!:damn:
Can someone using ZoneAlarm please tell me what I did wrong or what gives please!
I do get myself into deep water!:yep:

PS: Does anyone think this is lagit:

The seller claims to have purchased a genuine product key from the manufacturers.

Nothing wrong in that...therefore, why not sell the original in it's box http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/181...kbigsw1yo4.gif

There are many a key generator for games and software on the internet....which is what I suspect has happened here.
