Wine 1.0 is out : SH3, SH4 on Linux is possible

Wine 1.0 is out after 15 years of dev.

You can run windows app/games on Linux like SH2, SH3 or SH4 (with some limitations) but it works.

e.g. SH3 : http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...rsion&iId=5618

screens shoots of SH3 under linux : http://appdb.winehq.org/screenshots....VersionId=5618

I'll wait until it is updated through synops.

What are some of the limitations you mentioned?

UglyMowgli 06-18-08 05:48 AM

lacking windows compatability for sims was the one thing that always kept me away from starting to check out linux. Does Wine work reliable? Is it managable for a normal user not knowing all kinds of programmers' background stuff?

I'm not an epxert in linux stuff, and wine is very simple to install.
I tested wine with some windows products (word, excel, illustrator and photoshop) and it works fine, for the games it depend how they handle directX but it seem that almost all games works with wine (except DX10 ones)

one one my friend is trying to run FS2004, I wait for the results.

Let me know, that is a major interest of mine. Beyond FS2004, it sounds good. I do not buy new games anymore it seems, and run only a few older ones, so DirX10 is not my concern anyway.

I think it is not a problem to run a Linux and windows-installation parallel on one HD, in different partitions, right?

If Windows-compatability of FS2004 is assured , and double-installation is no problem, Linux could become a serious thought of mine when Windows XP is topped being supported by Ms in some years at the latest. If Linux is no huge insider thing anymore, maybe even earlier.

Any tip for a webpage giving a good first start and overview?

Well, for an easy install of wine there is somme tools but before use them, you must understand how wine works:

the wine manual:
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/index

win doors, an add on that make install windows apps easy
http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/?page_id=5

for games, if you use more than one game : http://www.playonlinux.com/en

I am not an expert with linux but Imanage to make windows apps to run on my ubuntu dist.
