McCain Seeks to End Offshore Drilling Ban

McCain just got a big boost in image in my mind! Maybe I will vote for him after all!

This is one of the few things that I agree with Senator McCain.

The solution to our energy problem will be two fold

1. Increase production in the short term. Like it or not, we need oil.
2. Explore and develop alternative sources for the long term solution

Gots to have both of them.

I am sure that with today's technology we can build and operate a drilling rig that will minimize the effects on the environment (can't ever eliminate it) while maintaining an increased safety level from leakage (can't ever be 100% safe)

Now if we can only get permission to build some nice new safe efficient refineries to replace the old crappy ones we have been using for far too long.

Why not? everyone and their brother is doing it and some off our coast to boot!

First one is about to be built in over 30 years! Should be able to refine up to 4% of our total refining capacity!

Refiniries, yes. It's silly that oil is being wasted in inefficient old ones.

If the object of this move is to bring down gas prices, then it very much conflicts with his carbon cap-and-trade proposal. Totally conflicts.

So you prefer it if a candidate has messy & mutually conflicting policies? :-? That's perfect?

Actually, McCains new emphasis on energy/environment has the air of most of his domestic issues - you never get the impression that he's interested in them.

Votes against Climate Security, plans to drill more oil, then runs around misunderstanding his own carbon cap scheme. This is quite a turnaround from 2000, when he was viciously against offshore drilling, saying the "special interests" in Washington wanted it, and he was going to fight the good fight. Or some "maverick" nonsense.

EDIT - CNN has a look at his energy speech - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-OL7TsS9P4
