Situational Awareness is a Must!
It's Feb 1940:
I'm stalking a convoy in a Type IXB around Eastern England and I think I was detected by a C&D Destroyer. So dove to periscope depth, all stop, and (at Manual Targeting on) torpedoed the sucker with my stern tube torpedo. Then the sonar guy screamed out there's another DD coming from ahead of me so I looked and it's coming in fast. Just observing the incoming DD, the Chief Engineer alerted me to damage to the stern compartments. Huh? Still at periscope depth and all stop. Looked through the observation scope (Had the Green Atlantic mod on) and I can see, not clearly that darned C&D destroyer whacking my stern off! So, all ahead, blow ballast! Sunk to the bottom at 30m (North Sea) and... "U-boat destroyed by collision" Game Over!:damn: Doh!:damn: |
 Momentum's a b*tch sometimes, ain't it.

One of the reasons I never, ever stop...
