Just curious if you know....
Has there been any actual WWII submariners who have played this game? Did they have any comments?
I know Admiral Fluckey died last year, but also wondering if any fleet boat commanders have seen SHIV and had any comment. I was telling a fellow the other day something I believe, if (a long stretch here) something like SHIV had been available in the late 30's, that it would have been required training for a fleet boat commander. Even with it's shortcomings (i.e., no maintenance casualties, very simplified navigation, no random events, etc.), I think the game is great, and about as close to a training/simulator you are going to find. Generally, just wondering if any WWII submariners would share such an opinion. Regards, Feltan |
That's an interesting question!
I think SH4 is night and day above the last sub sim I played back in 87 or about then, as long as you play on 100% realism with a mod like RFB. Back in the 80s, everything was limited by the power of the computers of the day. I fear the whole simulation genre is dying now though, and what will limit us from here on is not the power of modern computers, but the tiny size of the hard core sim market. Everyone wants Playstation shoot-em-ups, and ever fewer of us want the best simulations we can get |
Sub skipper Bud Gruner did the 'Talk-arounds' for SH1, back in '96. I don't know if he actually played it.
And to both of you, WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny: |
I actually live next door to a few WWII vets and a few 'Nam vets. I think I will show them and ask their opinion.

I AM a few 'Nam vets. I play it, but I doubt if my opinions are any better than those of anyone who's studied the subject.
