Otto Kretschmer tactics
Have someone tried to perform a surface attack at night inside of the convoy? The distance between ships is very short and the length of the convoy too. In GWX 2.1 would be a suicide?

I've never gotten away with it from inside a convoy. Just too dense in there. In good weather I do perfer going in decks awash and doing the shoot and scoot thing. Works great. Start on one side of the Convoy and see how close you can get to the other side.

I did a surface attack last night in a convoy in Feb. 1939 using GWX 2.1. No escorts!!! I bagged almost 40,000 tons of Brit and Canadian ships. The escort appeared as "nuetral" on the map. But all I could find was on small Norwegian freighter. The rest were legit targets.

I did it last night after my topedeos accidently hit the only DD in the group,it was early in the war BE 55 and the only other ship with firepower was an OT Tender,I sank 5 before I took a direct hit from the OT Tender, damage was repairable so I submerged and got two more with all the confusion, ships was going in all directions:yep:

In the documentary "Battle of the Atlantic" I think it was his WO interviewed.
He said something along the lines of 'My captain Otto Kretschmer was a very intelligent man, and very cold blodded." Ok well Otto Kretschmer was the Man. :know: Just thinkiing the whole Das Boot ram & jam deal doesn't gear well in the game. Past `40 at least. It's fun though, watching merchants scatter & try to ram. Untill they start shooting back. |

I have sneaked into a convoy on the surface at night (nearly rammed a merchant in the process) at very low speed. Managed to fire off a couple of torps before I had to dive deep. More luck than judgement perhaps. Nemo |
One of the cool aspects of Sierra's Aces of the Deep commander's game was the bonus interviews with Otto Kretschmer. One of the Interviews I remember was of description of a successful night surface attack. I'm surprised those videos haven't made it onto youtube.
