best submarine game?
Hej Hej...
while waiting for solutions with my problems with AOD (.http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show....php?t=137187)... i asked myself, if it is the best submarine game avaible...maybe it's time to try another one...but i have absolutly no idea... so, what's in your opinion the best submarine game? (i know about SH4 etc...but never played it...so no experience...) |
I'm going to say... it depends on the TYPE of submarine game. For WWII, I'd have to say Silent Hunter III (Maybe eventually eclipsed by SHIV due to the new Atlantic addon that will hopefully be bugfixed someday).
For modern, it just doesn't get better than Dangerous Waters patched up to 1.4 with the LWAMI mod. |
i think in WII it's more exciting, because of the setting...but it should not be too complicated and have at least a breath of story (i care more about the content than graphics...)...

I'd say SHIV at this point is a safe bet. There are still reasons to prefer SHIII, such as the theater and the extent of the user-made add-ons for it, but SHIV is every bit as functional and looks prettier.
If you prefer the Atlantic, SHIII is still a more complete set. If you like the Pacific or don't care either way, SHIV is probably a better investment. Thanks to Operation Monsun/Drumbeat mods, you can already play a limited number of realistic U-boat ops in SHIV. |
Silent Hunter II! :p
I loaded up SHII last night on older PC cause it can't play any games past SH3 i had to install some oldies there i found SH2 cd smothered in dust and scratches install and was quite amazed at the graphics i mean i own Shells of Fury yet SH2 looks way prettier. With Aces Campaign mod and a few water mods installed SH2 is good for its age. Im hooked. :) Now if only we could port over SH3 ships into SH2:hmm: |
submarine sim game-best?
btw, I watched a youtube video of someone playing a submarine sim game, which was high res, but it looked cartoonish and it had HUD type display. Surely that wasn't SH4? If so, I think I'll save my money. I know, I am a purist=I am weird. I'll stick to the first 3 SH's if that was SH4.

Uh no. SHIV is built on the same engine as SHIII, with obvious graphical and feature improvements. If anything, stock SHIV, especially with the U-boat add-on, is leaps and bounds better than stock SHIII, both graphically and in terms of realism. It's only with mods that their 2-year age difference gives SHIII more claim to refinement.
If you were to get only one game today, I would suggest SHIV over everything. It's great and will get better. It's the subsim of today and tomorrow. But SHIII with mods like GWX 2.1 and SHIII Commander is an experience that I think no subsimmer should miss either :yep: |
Ugh ya couldn't pay me to play SH2, even back when it came out. On my system the graphics and colors were very very ugly. Not to mention buggy missions, no dynamic campaign etc.
As for modern subsims, well there isnt much choice, its either a sonalysis game (dangerous waters) or nothing pretty much unless you want to go realy far back. I didn't much care for DW simply because i found it too canned and lacking in replayability. Sure you could make your own missions, but that kind of defeats the point since you will know everything about the mission. I've always wished for a sh3 type campaign, but with modern subs (year 1990-2000ish) set in ww3 but with out nukes/chem/bio weapons being used (like Red Storm Rising). |

There was SUPPOSED to be one called Deep Angel, but it never got released (wasn't sure if it was going to be a game, CGI movie, or both). Set in the distant future, they would use super cavitation to travel supersonic under the sea. Would have been interesting to have a battleship like that and a good plot to work with. Would be interesting to have something in current time (even nuke subs) with a "limited" war in both Atlantic and Pacific, maybe against pirates, some warlord that took over some country, etc, that we'd have to deal with. Oh well......... |
