Does this mean I have to reinstall?
I was re-enabling some mods after making a few changes to the Roster>Names file. All of a sudden I little error message pops up saying some files are corrupt. Here is a shot...
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4906/errorsr6.jpg Does this mean I have to reinstall yet AGAIN? Ever since installing SH4, I have run JSGME, Disk Defrag, and the uninstall/reinstall program more times than it seems I played the game. If I have to reinstall yet again, I'm not sure I want to keep going through this again and again. Part of me just wants to uninstall SH4 for good and be done with it; the other just wants to leave it stock and not bother with messing around with countless files anymore (I'm always tweaking or changing something. I can't help it.:damn:). I don't really want to run Chkdsk because that stupid thing takes forever. Why can't these damn computers just work? :damn::damn::damn: |
Just a little question , do you have a seperate sound card or onboard sound .
|
I'm curious, how would that affect anything? I've always wondered if my setup would be considered onboard or not. My motherboard is an Abit Fatal1ty AN8 that has a daughter card that I have used. It does use Realtek Audio drivers, which is why I am confused about it. I know most onboard sound uses Realtek Audio.

Just for these occasions I keep a nice fresh copy of 1.5 hidden in a special folder just copy and go. Happy Hunting! |
*Takes a deep breath*
Ok, I undid all the mods and then did a snapshot comparison. This is what comes back: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Shaders\Filters\CloudShadowPS.fx 1/31/2007 12:20:36 PM no longer exists! C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Shaders\Filters\CompoundFilterPS.fx 1/12/2007 12:27:08 PM no longer exists! How can they just disappear? Quote:

This error usually suggests a corruption with your master file table or file allocation table, well outside the scope of either JSGME or SH4.
Two options: 1. Lazy, quick and dirty (cross fingers): Disable all mods, then delete the MODS\!BACKUP and MODS\!INSTLOGS folders and all contents. Then try again and pray. 2. Long, but more thorough way that aims to get at the root cause: Complete the above step, then before re-enabling anything, run chkdsk with the /R switch, which checks for both bad HD sectors and file errors. Yes, it will take a few hours, but it may just reduce subsequent pain. I'd run it while I was sleeping, or at the least when not needing to otherwise use my computer. Ordinarily I'd also recommend defragging, but I see you're a regular with that. |

Is that the corrupt stock file? When I check the TMO 1.5B folder, it has that file. 2. I will probably run it later on. When I booted the computer this morning, it ran a Chkdsk. It must have scheduled one from that balloon popping up last night. In any event, here is the log from that scan: Quote:

OK. You may need some assistance from someone else for a bit of this, because I don't have any of the mods that you have (I don't even have SH4 installed), so don't know which one(s) include the problem file, although to me it does appear to be the TM_15B mod copy causing the grief.
But what I would do now is delete the MODS\!BACKUP and MODS\!INSTLOGS folders and all contents. I would then delete the mod(s) that contain the file causing the grief, and I would re d/l them; this covers the scenario of corrupt d/l files. I would then re-enable the mod(s) and see how it goes from there. If it still fails, I'd then do a chkdsk /r on the (presumably C:\) drive overnight, just to see whether there is anything sinister happening on the hard drive itself. |
I have to wonder, is there a limit as to how large a mod JSGME can work with? Uncompressed, TM's data directory is 890 MB with 2,017 files. At anyrate, i find myself wondering if somehow something flugged up when being enabled, or maybe just a bad download? Granted the troubles shown here are a bit beyond me. I would have pushed the panic button and have been removing everything related to SH4 and running scan disk and defrag. Failing that, id be going to reformat land. Although i know thats not the most appealing of options. Redoing a drive back to how you had it can take all day.

Great utility and as much as I use and abuse it....it is amazing stuff. Currently running 6 installs of this....and all are up and running. Knock on wood! |

In my post above, I'm suggesting that a bad/corrupt d/l may be contributing to the problem, or at least needs to be elimated from the situation. |

I am curious though to know the details of the folder to which to you are refering. |
If I have a bad download WinRar usually tells me something is corrupt. I've never had a problem when it didn't say a download is corrupt. Nonetheless, I unzipped the Shaders folder for both TMO 1.5B and PE3 again to make sure the corrupt file is gone.
I am back on track (at least I hope). I defragged and ran Chkdsk again. I had Chkdsk automatically fix file system errors and attempt to recover bad sectors. Hopefully it will work better. Sober was good enough to send me the files to replace the corrupt ones. I have since made a backup of my entire 1.5 Data folder, so I will be ready next time (I hope there isn't one). |
