We're heading over to the Gathering of Nations today to hang with our Ind'in brothers and sisters and pick up a bit of buffalo jerky. We'll take some snaps for all of you to post later.

Went to a small one in Eastern Washington many years ago.

Would really love to go to one of these some day. The closest I ever got was a small event in London 5 years back.

So is this open to all tribes or is it just Southwestern tribes? (like Navajo). It's great to see these traditions being kept alive.

It's all tribes. There were representatives of Eastern tribes like the Oneida and tribes from Mexico and Canada as well. Here's some more pics:

The only fly in the ointment was no buffalo vendors this year. I called my Apache Clamper brother in Reno and told him. We agreed. What Pow-wow doesn't have Buffalo? Times must be hard.

@Ishmael: I'm curious on your opinion on the Native Tribes in the Northwest that still do the tradtional whale hunts.

I fully support any Native expression or revival of ancient customs and tribal practices. The Northwest whale hunts are an expression of tribal culture and are conducted with traditional equipment, in open boats with hand-thrown harpoons. This is a REAL hunt. What I object to is the industrialized hunting of whales. Traditional hunts bind the tribes together in shared experience and the continuation of their ancient culture. The whales killed are used and eaten by the tribe and the numbers killed are much smaller than any commercial whaling venture.
